Can any1 please help???

Post by sweet_angel21us »

I have very little information about my Italian side of the family. I have no idea what part of Italy they were from. I can't find any record of when my family came to America. If any one can help me find what part of Italy the Garino's came from i would greatly appreciate it. Below is what i do have on my grandfather
John Baptist Garino Jr.
b. 26 Jul 1919 location unknown
d. 20 Jul 2006 in Florida, USA

He married Marion Young who was born 22 Apr 1921 and they had 4 children, all of there children were born in America starting in 1947 thru 1954.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. I am at a loss as to were to begin or what to look for. :? TIA

He is listed as John B. garino in the www.ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com born July 26, 1919, died July 20,2006 Flagler Florida. You can write away to the social security by lclicking the blue SS-5 button on the website alongside his name and for about $27.00 you can get a copy of his original social security application which may have his town of origin in Italy along with his parents names. Since he died recntly perhaps his death certificate has his town of birth in Italy..who has the certificate inyour family?=Peter=

I have the application for a copy of his SS5, however i just separeted from the USAF and i still do not have a job so spending money really isnt an option right now. I know his father was Sr. and more then lickly born in Italy. My grandfather, the one who died in FL, was believed to be born in America but i have been unable to find any information about him, there are 100's of John Garino's. I have had no communications with my fathers side of the family since i was 7. Once the divorce Grandma Garino thought it was best to no have anything to do with me. I have been trying to find out as much as i can, however it would seen the negative feelings that side of my family tree has for my Mom has carried over to me as well. I have spoken with my Father, however he, most of the time, doesnt even know who i am. I am not to entirely sure that the name Garino was spelled that way when they were in Italy. I have been told, which i am unsure how true any of this is, that my great-grandfather and his brothers had ties to the mafia, a lot of them died young and by gun fire so i have been told. I am so lost with it all that i really just have no idea where to begin to look...with out spending a ton of money.

I regret your current circumstances but without more information it is difficult to assist you. In the interim perhaps if you read the way to conduct your own Italian genealogy research free of charge you may be able to understand what information you need. If you got to the website
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... earch.html you will appreciate the need for th einformation we are asking. =Peter=

Thank you for the link. I do understand that more information is needed, however i am hoping there is someone out there that might be able to tell me more about the Surname Garino. It is possible they changed the spelling when they came to America. I do not even know what part of Italy my family came from. I have been reading up on Italy but i still do not understand the provinces, the difference between the north and south. I have seen posts where people have been able to locate Surnames in a specific part of the country thus helping the searcher narrow down where to look.

If you go to www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi and put in Garino in the upper left corner (cognomi=last name) and click the map of Italy will come up with the distribution of persons in present day Italy who are surnamed GARINO thruout Italy. You wuill notice that the surname GARINO is heavily concentrated inthe Piemonte region of NW Italy while there are some areas where there are just one or two towns having persons so named. =Peter=
