Hello Kelly, and Welcome to the Forum!
Do you have any of your family’s US records (census, military, ship manifests)?
For example, Natale D’Amato’s naturalization paperwork is on footnote. com
What can we do to help?
Thanks! Valarie

Re: FIATO / DILALLO / D'AMATO / AMATO in Bellona
WOW!! Valerie ---Thank you so much. I do have a couple of manifests for my family but not any of these -- I am so excited!! ........and I did not have any of the information on Natale. I find the Italian side of my family to be one of the hardest to research.
Can you tell me what "MA" before the name means? I have seen it several times.
I want to once again thank you for your kindness. It is greatly appreciated

Kelly, we're always happy to help.
Ma. before a name usually is the abbreviation for Maria.
Have you tried to research your family in Italy?
Since you have the location, names and dates you should be able to go back much further in your research.
You can order (rent) and view microfilmed records for Bellona at your local Family History Center.

Hi Valerie,
I actually just visited the LDS website and noted that one of the microfilms they have available is one that includes the Bellona area. I am going to call the local site tomorrow and request that they order it.
Do you have any experience with LDS? If so, have you found the microfilm helpful?
Thank you again
Kelly

Since you have so many names (thank you!), as a starting place,
could you tell us which are the most important (in the US)
I'm guessing Giuseppina D'Amato & Gioacchino Fiato?
I think you have to go in person to order your films.
Yes, I've done most of my family's films.
(It's pretty easy after you get used to the handwriting and practice translating a few from Italian to English)
Italian records are incredible.
The number of generations you can find is almost beyond belief.

Re: FIATO / DILALLO / D'AMATO / AMATO in Bellona
Yes, you are correct..... Guiseppina and Gioacchino were my great grand parents. I follow the line of their daughter Raffaela. I have quite a bit of information on my grandmother and her 9-siblings because they all lived locally but not a lot of information about any extended family or any prior generations.
There is only one surviving sibling and she is in her 80's. She has told me all that she could remember but she is close to 15-years younger than her oldest sibling and said they very rarely spoke about the family back in Italy.

Thanks Kelly!
We'll see if we can find any records in the US that you may not have seen yet.
It's wonderful that you have a great aunt that you can talk with .

Re: FIATO / DILALLO / D'AMATO / AMATO in Bellona
Hi Valerie,
I can't begin to thank you enough. I had seen the 1920 Census but not the 1930. Fanny (Filomena) is my Aunt that is still alive. She is an incredible lady... you would never know she is in her 80's. She has told me some vey funny family stories and what it was like growing up in a large family. I guess my great-grandmother was a very superstitious woman and always had a problem when her children did not marry Italians <smile>....most of them didn't
I recently obtained the SSN record for Natale AMATO and it indicated he was born in Villa Volturno.....do you know if that is in/near near Bellona?

and a CAPRIATI AL VOLTURNO abt 60 km north
Here's a bit on Bellona, scroll down to see nearby towns, villages:

You know it's interesting that he stated another town since his naturalization paperwork has Bellona.

(yes, my g-grandmother didn't speak to her daughters-in-law that weren't Italian & that was more than half of them! )

Thank you for the link on the towns/villages near Bellona. I just took a look at the SSN record again and it clearly says Villa Volturno. The date of birth matches as does his father's name so I am sure it is him........ it is strange though.
I also noted while looking at ship manifests that married females seem to use their maiden name.......... is that typical? I noticed this most with my Italian lines...... not so much with my Dad's English lines.
