Where to write for birth records?

My grandfather, Francesco Maresca, was born in Appignano, Teramo, Abruzzi, Italy February 16, 1890, would I be able to find his birth record anywhere online or do I need to write to someone in Italy?

You have the option of checking for microfilmed records, which would be rented thru the Lds and viewed at their facility, or writing to the comune.
There are VERY few Italian records online.

The town of origin has been filmed, records from 1809 thru 1865 are available:

The proper way of obtaining microfilm from a Family History Center
1. You go to www.familysearch.org

2. Click on the tab on the top right called Library

3. Click on the words Family History Library Catalog

4. Click on the words Place Search and type in the town you are looking for. Then click the word search.

5. A list of the results will show up. (an example: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

6. Click on the link you are looking for such a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Vital Records. A new page will appear where it will show all the films for Vital Records

7. Click on the link you want such as Death Registries.

8. Click on View Film Notes and a list of the microfilm numbers will appear.

9. Click at the bottom of the page, For a printable copy, click hereand you will get a form to print out with all the film numbers.

10. Click print.



Ordering Microfilm

1. Now the FHC does not have all the microfilm in their possession.

2. You have to order the microfilm which takes 3-4 weeks for it to arrive.

3. It costs about $5.75 a roll for 30 days of viewing time.

4. If you need to renew the microfilm, it cost about $5.50 for another 60 days.

5. If you need to renew it after the 60 days, it will cost another $5.50 and the films can be kept on an indefinite bases.

6. Microfilm must be viewed at the FHC.

7. Copies are $0.35 a page.

I must be doing something wrong or told the wrong info

when I put in the province - Teramo
the town of Appignano does not appear in the drop down menu.

My grandfather's naturalization papers say on one page that he was born in Appignano, Italy and the other page say Abbruzzi, Italy. I was told that Appignano is the town, Teramo is the province, Abbruzi is the region.

Do you know if this is correct?

I typed in Appignano in the top and 3 Appignano's appear - the one I want in the province of Teramo - can't click on!
But to the right of it, it says something about 'Castiglione' and this is where my grandfather's brother's(they came to US after him in 1910) say they last resided.

You are correct. In fact if you go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in Appignano in the top and click Cerca you will see the postal code, Appignano, the province of Teramo and the Region of Abruzzo. If you click on Appignano the town municipal government and addresses will show up and then there will be a website for the towns other interesting facts and fotos, if any and just click on that www for this second website.

There are two other towns located elsewhere with Appignani as part of the name as well. Please let us know if you need more information. =Peter=

Your Appignano in Teramo province Postale 64034 is not considered a Comune (a municipality in its own right) but is part of the actual Comune of which Appignano is a part. This comune is CASTIGLIONE MESSER RAIMONDO also Postale 64034. and if you clickon the Castiglione Messer Raimondo alongside the Appignano listing you will see that Appignano is a "FRAZIONE" (neighborhood, suburb or absorbed comune by a larger Comune) Sowere you to write for documents you would write to the Uffico di Stato Civile in Castiglione Messer Raimondo. I put this in two parts to make it easy for you.

Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in Castiglione Messer Raimondo and click on that name when the second page come up after clicking CERCA/=Peter=

Also the Family History Center has the records for Castiglione until 1910. I would check these records also.

Clicked on your link - where do you search? or is this a microfilm that I would rent and view at a History Center? Most likely in Italian and I would need someone to interpret!!

Look back up at wldspirit's directions. The records are in Italian, but the format is the same for all the birth records. This way you can trace the whole family back and then send for the records you want. Peter has a list of helpful books which can be found in other posts, or I am sure Peter will list them again for you.
