So now I have two different Giovanni's to track thru. Being as the one posted early on shows married on his passenger record upon entry here in 1922, and now this one who was here prior to 1922 and was married in 1921.

Lots of cool stuff!!!!

HELP?!?!

I found out some more information from a couple Aunts that I found, that I did'nt know I had.

My father was Born in Philadelphia PA ( I'll have to try and obtain those records)
His father (My grandfather) was born in Italy but not known where.
He came to the US around age 5 or 6, in 1902-1903. He traveled here with his older sister. (It is thought she was a teenage at the time)
THe assumption now is; they were with someone when going thru Ellis Island and used their last name on documents (could this be)
Don't know if they would let a teen and child in without an adult.

My grandfather was not always called "john" or "Giovanni" I am told it was a REALLY odd italian name that he got made fun of A lot so it was changed.
(I dont know if it was legally changed or they just started calling him John.)
His sister was "Jenny" No one knows of her being called anything but that.

Now: I cant find a "Jenny" in the ellis island site arriving in 1902-1903 (the alledged year they came to the US) I cant do a year wide search looking at all names in from 1902 or 1903. Any suggestions of where I could look now??

Thanks

Question (Again)
I learned my grandfathers name was not originally Giovanni

I did learn that he married a "Catherine Marrone"
My aunt told me this.

Your quoted info seems just too close not to be a match. I could only assume the kids (aunts uncles) never had the correct spelling??

THis all make sense?

On an LDS site I found from "orphan's court philadelphia" marriage license index 1917-1938
Giovanni Carosiello (Maurone) 1921 (M) 449993

There is no mention of "caterina"

Following the link you provided I was not able to find the document you quoted.

If you look through the index on the page with M (p. 143 of 402) you will see Catarina Maurone with the same license # and year.

Looking on Find a Grave I see there are several people with your surname buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, just outside Phialdelphia. In my experience this is the cemetery where all of my family from South Philly were buried.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... =40&GSob=n

You can call the cemetery office at 610- 626-2206 and ask if your John or Catherine are buried there. They are more than nice and extremely helpful. I was there Saturday and I could not believe how nice they were.

As far as obtaining the birth certifcate of your father the PA Dept. of Health has all birth and death records after 1915 and you should be able to obtain a copy.

Best of luck!

Thanks, Found it.

As for Holy Cross. I do know for a fact that my brother Lewis and his mother are burried there. However, they don't show in the list when searched. I will be calling

It appears most of the information posted early on by members here was right on. The draft card with "Jenny Volpi" I found that "Jenny" was my fathers older sister. Not sure where "Volpi" came from, (if it's the same one) All anyone remembers is "Jenny"

I guess back it the day, it was easy to switch or change spellings of names. All I know is, it makes it VERY difficult to find links to family when researching.

Re: What are my options in locating documents?

Great info!! Thanks. But, I think I may be chasing the wrong Carosiello. THe one that this information is linked to (which goes to the World War I draft card shows a date of birth as 5 may 1897.

I talked to an aunt I found last night and she informed me of what little information she had.
1) Giovanni had another name at birth that kids made fun of thus it was changed to Giovanni and eventually John But, no one remembers what it was just that it was an "odd traditional male name"
2) He came to the US at age 5 (+-) 1 year. and was born in 1897
3) His older sister "Jennie" brought him here from Italy (no idea how old jenny is. (I did find a Jenny that died in 1995)
4) John / Giovanni died in the mid 1960's
5) I find the following:
John Carosiello
D.O.B. 12 Aug 1897
D.O.D. Jan 1966 Camden, NJ
Age 69
SSN 166-05-4770
With all the name changes I think I'm in for years of work
Thanks again for everyones help and posts. It all helps, even the stuff that eliminates a location to look.

HOLY SHNIKEYS!!! THAT IT ON THE MONEY
There were 2 children still born then Anna was the first to live. She died at 40 from cancer. Then there was Peter then my Father John.

I dont have a clue where you found that. At this point I have to say thats 100% who I need to track. The "Ceosiko" puzzles me. But from what i have read here and other sites like the Ellis Island site. The name was usually spelled how the writer "thought" it should be or how they "heard" it.

Thank you SO VERY MUCH. If you stumble across anything else within this info. please post it.

WOW thanks again.
Now I have to track down what his original first name was from Italy before he changed it to John.

I'm so glad we found your family in 1930 :D .
It was found by using a search on ancestry. com for a 'John' in Phila
born 1897 +/- 2yrs in Italy, spouse Cat*.
The 'Ceosiko' was one of the search results.
When I looked at the actual census page it appeared to be a transcription error for 'Carosillo'
- which indeed appears to be a sounded out name  .

I cant thank everyone here enough with all the help.

NOTE:

Due to the infomation found thru help from you great members, I found a niece that lives about an hour from me. She is my brother "lewis" (who died) child from his first marraige. She is now 35 and will be comming to my house for christmas. It's odd having a niece 4 years younger but my heart has been racing ever since.

Update:

Still pretty much in the same holding pattern as I was last year. I have met a total of 4 family members because of the information in this thread, they are all Nieces.
Lastnight I found a Cousin (My fathers, brothers, son) and we talked for several hours. Seems he knew nothing of our origin either.

I do know that the Draft Card found and posted here is verified. It turns out Giovanni changed his date of birth by 3 months to enter the Army.
*Unfortunatly the "Nearest Relative" information is not clearly visible due
to age and writting skills. The two names and the Street are difficult to
make out.

The 1930 Census record has also been varified, based on names, ages and dates.

The 1920 Census information appears to be to inconsistant to verify. As well as no family members can remember anything other then a "Jenny"
(The youngest of them is 70 so I'm not too surprised)

Immigration: At this time I still can not find a record on Ellis Island of the arrival in 1905 (as stated on Census records)

A am currently working on an Italy connection via facebook, however on line translators do not work all that well as I have found out. I have contacted a man there, that seemed to have a father that emmigrated to the US two times. Onces "possibly" as a child, then a second time as an adult in his 20's. The later I can find on a manifest, but states that he had never been to the US, but that may have been a deseption.

Just thought I'd share an update. If anyone has another suggestion where I might look for information for arrival logs let me know. or information in general that I've not thought to look for.

Thanks.
