She can send a private message on this site. If sherryt gets email notification of her messages, she'll come back here. She may not have posted again because there was no response from Linda for a while.

Dear Linda, Lipari is not a tuscan surname from Siena area.CapeTownItalians wrote:We are looking for any Lipari's from province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy?
Please if there are any Lipari's out there, would love to hear from you.
Our great grandfather, Bartollomeo Lipari, born 27/09/1875 at Cecilia, Italy.
He immigrated to South Africa, early 1900's he must have been about 25yrs when he came over. He married a S.A. woman named Sarah on the 21/10/1901 and they had six children, one girl Angeline(my grandmother) and five boys, Henry, Francesco, Michael, Anthony and Luke!
If there is anyone out there with information on the Lipari family would love to hear from you.
We are trying to get hold of his birth certificate from Poggio Santa Cecilia but will take a while, so in the meantime if you have any information will be much appreciated. (There friends here were the Bosco family also from Italy.)
Ciao
Linda
Lipari is a typical sicilian surname, probably deriving from a sicilian toponym, Lipari Island in Sicily: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipari
All the Liparis you can found outside Sicily were emigrated (from Sicily).
Regards.
Jacobus
Re: SURNAME, LIPARI, SIENA ITALY
Yeah, Cecilia could be an incorrect spelling for Sicilia.CapeTownItalians wrote:A copy of an old "register" (stating his date of birth, where he was born and who he married as well as a list of his children) we have says that he was born at Cecilia, Italy. Are we wrong to assume it could be Sicilia or is it Poggio St Cecilia??
I also did check out the paginebianche.it and there are more Lipari's in Sicilia than anywhere else in Italy? Strange.
Ciao
Linda
Poggio Santa Cecilia is a frazione of Rapolano Terme, near Siena in the crete senesi. Here you can found some info:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poggio_Santa_Cecilia
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapolano_Terme
You could write to the comune of Rapolano Terme: http://www.comunerapolanoterme.it/
I have lived for a while in Siena area, and i'm sure that Lipari is not a surname from Siena.
Regards.

Dear Jacobus there is a Lipari residing in the province of Siena. Go to www.paginebianche.it for the source. =Peter=

From Cognomi italiani (italian surnames):
http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/cognomi0010i.htm
LIPARA LIPARI
Tipici siciliani e del reggino, quasi scomparso Lipara, derivano dal toponimo Lipari (ME), isola delle Eolie, o dal suo nome antico Lipara.
Translation:
LIPARA LIPARI
Typical sicilian surnames, also from Reggio Calabria area, deriving from toponym Lipari (Messina), sicilian island of the eight Aeolian Islands. Lipara is the ancient name of Lipari island.

Lipari is a base surname derived from LIPAROTI based upon the ethnic identification of Liparoto for inhabitants of those islands as outlined in the Italian surname dictionary.=Peter=
Re: SURNAME, LIPARI, SIENA ITALY
I agree, and it still demonstrates the Lipari is a sicilian surname and not a tuscan one.PeterTimber wrote:Lipari is a base surname derived from LIPAROTI based upon the ethnic identification of Liparoto for inhabitants of those islands as outlined in the Italian surname dictionary.=Peter=

Hi there
Are you saying that we are looking in the wrong region? Should we go back to Sicilia and try other provinces?

I'm saying that Lipari (if Lipari is the correct spelling of your great grandfather surname) is a typical sicilian surname. I have no doubt about it. Why am i so sure? Because I'm italian and i live in Italy.
Obviously, we can't rule out that your family moved from Sicily to Tuscany, where your great grandfather could have been born.

Buon giorno Jacobus
Thanks for that, still does not really help though.
Should I try the various provinces in Sicilia requesting his birth certificate?
We have already covered just about all of Tuscany. Like Arezzo, Siena, Venice, Modena, Luca, Udine and Florence and they have come back to us saying that he was not born there! It is very frustrating. Do you think it might help if we got his marriage certificate?
Where about in Italy are you living?

I think so. Starting from Messina and extending to Reggio Calabria Area. Lipari island is in the province of Messina.CapeTownItalians wrote:Buon giorno Jacobus

The correct spelling of your great grandfather should be "Bartolomeo", not "Bartollomeo".
San Bartolomeo (in english, Saint Bartholomew) is the patron of Lipari island. So, i guess it was a common name overthere.
Most important church in Lipari (a wonderful place) is "Cattedrale di San Bartolomeo" (Saint Bartholomew Cathedral), founded by Normans.

Venice is in Veneto region, Modena is in Emilia-Romagna region, Udine is in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. We have already covered just about all of Tuscany. I found a book published in Naples in 1861 about the history of "revolutions in the Reign of Naples (1647-1648)" transcripted by Bartolomeo Lipari Genovese in 1786. Genovese simply means from Genova (Genoa) and can be also a surname, very common in Italy, in Sicily too.
