Immigration

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Immigration

Post by sailfiori »

I don't know where to go with this now.
I have the names Antonio Stolo, Birth 1860 - Immigration / US possibly 1894 or 1912,
Rosa Stolo, Birth 1872 - Immigration / US 1902, Frank Stolo, Birth 1891 - Imigration /US 1902, James Stolo, Birth 1896 - Immigration / US 1902. Parents and 2 children respectively, all born in Italy. I have reason to believe this is southern Italy. Can you tell me how I may obtain the immigration records and possibly birth certificates etc.
Thanks

Hi Sailfiori,

I noticed (from the site Ancestry.com) that Antonio's son Frank died in California, I hope this is the right record:

California Death Index, 1940-1997
about Frank Stolo
Name: Frank Stolo
Social Security #:
Sex: MALE
Birth Date: 14 Sep 1893
Birthplace: Italy
Death Date: 11 Nov 1961
Death Place: Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name: Montanna

So I searched the arrival manifest for Rosa and her child and found this record:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Rosa Manrano
Name: Rosa Manrano
Arrival Date: 22 Jul 1902
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Age: 32
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Gallia
Search Ship Database: View the Gallia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 21
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_290
Page Number: 91

Last name on the manifest was mispelled, possible it was Montano/Montanno and she was travelling wiht her child:

Son, Di? Stola Francesco, age 10
Son, Di? Stola Vincenzo, age 7
daugher, Di? Stola Maddalena age 3

They were coming from Cervino (perhaps is Cervino in Caserta Province - Campania region) joining their Husband/father Antonio Stola in Rome - Oneida - NY

you can find the arrival manifest (free) on the Ellisisland.org site:
under the name Rosa Montano, here is the link:

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0021

Laura.

From ancestry.com here is 1910 census for the family, in Rome - Oneida - NY:

1910 United States Federal Census
about Antonio Stolo
Name: Antonio Stolo
Age in 1910: 49
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's Name: Rosa
Home in 1910: Rome Ward 3, Oneida, New York
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1894
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Antonio Stolo 49 born in IT
Rosa Stolo 38 born in IT
Frank Stolo 19 born in IT
James Stolo 14 born in IT (Vincenzo on the arrival manifest)
there is a second page for this family, the others child (not listed on the resume page) were:
Lena Stolo, 10 born in IT (Maddalena on arrival manifest)
Maria, 7 born in NY
Nicholas, 5 born in NY
Antonio, 3 born in NY
Rosina, 1/12 born in NY (twins?)
Pasquale 1/12 born in NY (Twins?)

page 2:

Rosa were travelling also with her brother Cuomo... The line under Maddalena you can see Montano Cuomo, age 35, married coming from Acerra (Napoli Province, Campania region, just 9 miles from Cervino :!: )
joining his brother in law Antonio Stola..

Sailfiori,

I think the correct spell fo the last name was Di Stola...

I found several Di Stola coming from cErvino on the Ellis Island site but none Stolo/Stola....

Yes ! Thank you........this is my family. We are originally from Rome, New York. I was stumped on the Ellis Island search because of the different spelling of name. The cemetery records in Rome, New York show Stolo (and of course that is the spelling of my mother's maiden name) and Montana. I can see the abbreviated spelling of "Lena" , and "Frank" from Francesco but is it typical to get "James" from Vincenzo? I do have the 1910 Census and it noted that they arrived (Rosa, Frank and James) in 1902. It shows Antonio Stolo (the father and husband) however, as arriving in 1894.

Should I confirm then that this is a match?

Thank you SO much!

And......thank you for the di Stola spelling. Perhaps I should research the Ellis Island records this way?

Thanks for your expertise and willingness to help. It is greatly appreciated.

You're welcome Michele!

I'm sure Rosa's 1902 arrival is correct for your family them both were going to join Antonio Stola in Rome...... and yes, James is the common "americanized" version of the first name Vincenzo.
I think the correct last name was Di Stola or Di Stora, you can see it's not a very common last name but is present in those areas...

This is a very helpful site for this kind of researches:
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

please digit "begin with" Di Sto in Campania region and you'll see that Di Stola and Di Stora are both present in Cervino...

I don't know if you're familar with the Family History centers, but I noticed they microfilmed the civil records for Cervino...

Topic Italy, Caserta, Cervino - Civil registration

Titles Registri dello stato civile di Cervino (Caserta), 1809-1929 Cervino (Caserta). Ufficio dello stato civile

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... umns=*,0,0

so, if you're interested in obtain births records or marriage record for your family you can search them by yourself in their microfilms.

In case you are not familiar I can point out you this suggestions from Wldspirit on this forum:
wldspirit wrote:There is also microfilmed records available for the town of interest:

Microfilm

A guide to using this resource:

The proper way of obtaining microfilm from a Family History Center
1. You go to http://www.familysearch.org/

2. Click on the tab on the top right called Library

3. Click on the words Family History Library Catalog

4. Click on the words Place Search and type in the town you are looking for. Then click the word search.

5. A list of the results will show up. (an example: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

6. Click on the link you are looking for such a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Vital Records. A new page will appear where it will show all the films for Vital Records

7. Click on the link you want such as Death Registries.

8. Click on View Film Notes and a list of the microfilm numbers will appear.

9. Click at the bottom of the page, For a printable copy, click hereand you will get a form to print out with all the film numbers.

10. Click print.

Ordering Microfilm

1. Now the FHC does not have all the microfilm in their possession.

2. You have to order the microfilm which takes 3-4 weeks for it to arrive.

3. It costs about $5.75 a roll for 30 days of viewing time.

4. If you need to renew the microfilm, it cost about $5.50 for another 60 days.

5. If you need to renew it after the 60 days, it will cost another $5.50 and the films can be kept on an indefinite bases.

6. Microfilm must be viewed at the FHC.

7. Copies are $0.35 a page.

Possible Antonio Di Stola/Stora did emigrate before his family just to settle and found a good arrangement for the rest of his family...

Please forgive this amateur inquirer........! I believe I missed the post you are referring to. I did not realize another had come in and I had not had time to check the ItalGen website! I just read it and I too am at a loss for words as I was with the first 2 responses! I believe I expressed gratitude for those......Let me do it again.......It is amazing to me and inspiring that you would freely give of your time and expertise in this way to a complete stranger ! I will read the post in detail and follow your instructions.
Thank you, thank you and so sorry this is late!

Good morning Michelle and Pink :D

I cannot take credit for the microfilm instructions, they were written by member Trish, I refer to the guide quite frequently as it is very helpful for those who want to pursue the use of microfilm for research.

Happy Hunting!
