surname: licata dieciotto

hi! i have a question about a surname. my g3 grandmother, calogera licata, (from campobello di licata, sicily born abt 1824) on every record i had found her name was followed by dieciotto, i assumed this was her age untill i realised she was still 18 over the next 50 years. then i found a birth certificate w/ the name maria licata dieciotto, that is when i decided you cant be born 18 yrs old! going through the fhl records ive found no previous licata dieciottos or any after. ive also searched the surname origin sites as well as looked for any present day licata dieciottos, they dont seem to exist. the documents are pretty clear or am i misinterpreting?

Dieciotto is not listed in the Italian surname dictionary and consequently is either ani mported name or local in origin. I suspect the Dieciotto is local in origin but this is merely conjecture on my part. =Peter=

i think i found her birth record it all adds up except the fathres last name is licata only. it just seemed really odd to me, i guess its just another genealogical mystery for me to solve.

Unfortunately the reason why dieciotto is attached to her surname is lost inthe mists of time. Perhaps someday when you go to Italy you can ask the anagrafe clerks if they can figure it out for you at the town hall. =Peter=

Well 'dieciotto' is not a word either...

Eighteen is written 'diciotto'.... BUT it could be (mean) 'ten - eight' that would be written 'dieci - otto'.

The plot thickens!

A thought just struck me... could it be something to do with the 'entry' and 'Register' number for that particular event? Is there any way of seeing adjacent entries where that one was found?

it've been looking for an excuse to go back to sicily again!
there is a separation between dieci and otto(sort of), but as i said it appears on all records w/ her name, her childrens birth records, her sons marriage record and her husbands death certificate. i've also found one record of a licata dodici,but only the one...ominus chord...

If you 'Google' Calogera Licata - there are still one or two in the Campobello area.

i see the certificates...
it seems a strange surname : Licatadiciotto but i don’t believe.
I’m searching surname Licata in that area and i still haven’t found a similar surname . I hope to find news for you,

thank you for taking an interest in this matter. i have searched records from her approximate year of birth (1824) but, the only thing i found was a atti di nascita for calogera licata without the diciotto. so i cant be sure that it is her. i would be very grateful for any information you may find.
