Creating a family tree to send

Post by carmine1917 »

So I have asked about family tree software before and it seems hands down Legacy is the best. My problem is this, when I want to email it to someone and they don't have Legacy, what do I do? I also would like to put my website on the net, should I buy a name? Pay yearly? Has anyone used Excel to create their family tree?

Hey there Micheles,

I use Family Tree Maker my self and have pretty good luck with this program. One of the features of this is i can share this with other people. When I e-mail them with the information they need in my family line, they have written back and have told me they have opened the e-mail with no problem. Also, if the person has a different program, moct of them with import the data and convert it with no problem. Most of the programs have a basic program that run the same. If search the web for doman sites, there are a few out there that are only a couple of dollars a year to set up a web site. One thing to watch for is the domans that charge for the amount of space that you use. And most people can tell you a collection of family names and pictures can add up pretty quick.
Hope this helps.

Most genealogy programs have an option to export the data (you can normally choose the entire database or only certain families) in Gedcom format. You would email the Gedcom file and the person receiving it should be able to import that same Gedcom file into their genealogy program. The program would convert the Gedcom file into the format they need to view the data. If they don't have a genealogy program, they can download a free one (PAF) from www.familysearch.org

Legacy allows you to export in GEDCOM format. GEDCOM files may be imported by most genealogical softwares.
