Hi edecatan.
I went to www.stevemorse.org which is a site that many of us use to find ships manifests, census info etc. Once on that site if you scroll down a bit you will see (in red) Castel Garden. Just below that you will see All NY ship lists 1820 to 1957.....select that link. Once the new window opens you will see Ship name and then 3 options for starts with, exactly or contains. I selected contains and put in the word simeto and it comes back with two results (one being the one you wanted). You then go below the word ship for your 1871 film and select that which takes you to the manifest. If you try this, you will note that NO ONE else was on board that ship as a passenger (I thought that was interesting).
As for the marriage index. The owner of the site I gave you transcribed the names from the real documents (that's why I said the wifes name is 80% certain based on spelling on ships manifest). It is read like this
groom - Giuseppe Catanzaro
grooms father - Paolo
grooms mother - Domenica Guiotto
date of marriage - Oct. 19, 1855
v. - stands for volume
n. 0180 - notation 0180
bride - Rosa Forestiere
And no you wasted no one's time. This is always a learning experience for every one here and we're always glad to help. No one on this forum or any other forum has all the answers. The only thing we can do is try.
I hope you're going to write to the Civil Office in Palermo and request an integral copy of the marriage. That will list Rosa's parents too.
You can use this link to generate your letter

There are also films available through the LDS for Palermo if you prefer to do a little researching yourself. You should be able to find the marriage documents and the childrens birth acts.

There are a lot of films for Palermo, make sure to scroll to the bottom of each page and say next to see more films. If you think you'd like to order films to view you will need to find a Family History Center (FHC)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp
go in to order your film(s). cost is approximately $5.50 USD per film and takes about 2 to 4 weeks to receive. The films have to be viewed at the center.
Please keep us updated on your progress and if you have questions just post back. Someone here will be happy to help you.
All the best
Elizabeth

Re: Catanzaro/Ruffo
Dear Edecatan just to remind you the address for the Stato Civile for Palermo that I furnished is up above and I am glad the Billie picked up the torch and found the ship and the information in such short order..she reminded me of sources that I neglected to rely on when orthodox researching let me down
Dear billie my compliments since I obviously experienced a cosmic moment in my quest for the good ship simeto. =Peter=-

One further question: Does anyone know when the Palazzo di Nobile in Catanzaro was damaged during an earthquake? I can't seem to find it online...

Re: Catanzaro/Ruffo
Hi Edecatan,
Here is what those other names signify.
Giuseppe Catanzaro got married.
Paulo Catanzaro was his father.
Domenica (nee Guiotta) Catanzaro was his mother.
The district of Palermo City was Molo.
The marriage date was 19 October 1855.
The original record is in volume 355, number 180.
Rosa Forestiere is the beautiful girl he married.
By going back to the index, same ten year section, and
looking up Rosa Forestiere you could find the same marriage
the other way around, and giving the parents of Rosa.
Plus a check on the date and volume/number information.
Then going back maybe 20 or 30 years you might find the
marriages of both pairs of parents.
That index of mine is a treasure chest.
