Hi,
Could someone chime in on the name of the mother on this birth certificate? The first name is Rosaria, age 34, but I can't figure out her last name.
My best guess, if all of those dots are "i's", is something like "Sibilica" or "Scibilia"
This is from Milazzo (Messina) in 1853.
Sorry if the photo is too big.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Another 19th Century Cursive Deciphering Question
Hi Jeff,
While waiting for the Italian experts to chime in with the real answer, let me just ask if in the rest of the document the names are in first-last order, as you're assuming the mother's name is here. On all of my family's birth certificates (from Northern Italy), the names are listed last-first. Just a thought.
Best,
Jerry

Dear Jeff,
it seems to be Scibilia. I've found that more than 5% of italians with this last name are living in province of Messina. Take a look at this site: http://cognome.alfemminile.com/w/cognom ... bilia.html
Good luck,
Maribor from Argentina

Definitively Rosaria Scibilia.
As pointed out by John and Maribor, Scibilia is a surname rather popular in Sicily.
