Need advice for translators in N. California, or elsewhere

I will have about 8-10 documents that need translation. Someone (in Italy, from this list) has offered translation services, but I'm not sure that would work logistically.

How do I find competent, *approved-by-the-Consulate* translators here in the Bay Area?

Does the translator have to be specially qualified or certified to do this? I ask because I know a few people who are fluent in Italian (one teaches Italian), but they may not have the imprimatur of the Italian Consulate.

Last, I want to keep costs down, as this is getting expensive! Most of the certificates are roughly $30, with additional charges for certification, and still more charges for apostilles.

I've heard of $50 per document for translation. Is it gouche to bargain with a translator? I'm naive about this stuff.

I used Gabriella Einaga as my translator when applying through Tokyo/San Francisco. (That's another story...) She was wonderful to work with and both consulates were happy with her work. In fact, she is on the list of approved SF translators. Best of all, she was very well priced ($15/document!) and very flexible. You just e-mail or fax the documents to her and she'll send the translations back. Payment was by Pay-Pal after all of the work was done. Here are her contact details.

Ma certo! Gabriella is an excellent translator. She completed my translation in a week's time at a very reasonable rate. Furthermore, she is friendly, responsive, and sends the copies to be proofed before sending the official copies.

Everything can be done electronically also.
