Deceased Name: Jane Centini: Salute to one very extraordinary woman
Jane Centini died two weeks ago. She was a member of the Council of Volunteer Coordinators.
It is unusual for me to honor individuals in this column, preferring the priority to be presenting vital information to prospective volunteers. But Jane's is a different and important story.
She was a volunteer and a leader of volunteers. She touched countless lives. And she was one of the most giving, selfless people I ever met.
Jane was exceptional - one of the most-honored volunteers in Lancaster County, but also the most quiet about it. Much of her recognition came from being a volunteer leader at Conestoga View, where she was recognized by the American Red Cross for 44 years of service. She won the CVC's Leadership Award, given to the most outstanding leader of volunteers; received a county Points of Light award; honorable mention for the Jefferson Awards; Sertoma's Service to Mankind Award; New Era Red Rose; and an award of appreciation from the Junior League of Lancaster, among others.
Jane taught Sunday School for more than 30 years at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She also volunteered for the Millersville Senior Center. Her volunteer activities are too numerous to list. And when recognized, she always turned attention away from herself. She was truly a humble person.
I had a chance to talk with her and learn from her every month for the last 10 years at CVC meetings. She was always the first one there, and usually had an example for me of something worthwhile someone else had done. It was never about herself. She was a real role model, and this past year, at almost 90, still had more energy than any of the younger people in the organization. I never knew her age, but I thought she was much younger, because of her attitude and her energy.
Fran Braun, past president of CVC, wrote about Jane in her volunteer newsletter at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. She said Jane believed in the worth of every person her facility supported, and she knew her volunteer time and energy made a difference. She did what needed to be done, but reached out far beyond what was expected of her. She said Jane deserves our everlasting thanks and that we should stop and think about the worth of every volunteer - that she exemplified the good in all of them. And that Jane was quite a lady.
Fran said it well. Lancaster County lost one of its most precious assets. I speak for Jennifer Stolte and the leadership group, and for Peggy Breneman, Susan Ballou and all of Jane's peers at the Council of Volunteer Coordinators when I say we will really miss her, and that we are humbled by her extraordinary example.
Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, the 18th-century historic home of Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand, will hold volunteer training and information sessions for tour guides and other volunteer roles at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the plantation. Attendees will tour the house and learn about available opportunities including the following volunteer positions: tour guides (in 18th century costumes), gardeners, administrative/clerical aides and event volunteers (such as those who will work with the annual Lobster Legacy fundraising dinner and auction the first Saturday of June). Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity, 443 Fairview Ave., needs skilled volunteers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Skills needed: carpentry, drywall-hanging, electrical, framing, aluminum-siding, painting and concrete. Team leaders are needed, with the skills listed, in addition to leadership ability. Volunteers build quality homes in partnership with low-income families in need; reduce costs of subcontracted services; build community and reduce neighborhood blight.
Habitat Re-Store volunteers are also needed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Volunteers stock shelves, pick up donated items, handle phones and a cash register, do inventory and clean. Call Taylor Evans at 392-8836, ext. 203.
Operation Kisses for Kaeden is a group of child volunteers who raise awareness and funds for children, as well as adults, who have heart defects, and for those in need. The group will hold an event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Wal-Mart, 2030 Fruitville Pike. Volunteers are needed to help sell hot dogs and hamburgers, candy, pins and bracelets for the benefit of the American Heart Association. Call Kennedy Jet Kulish, 871-9779.
