Great find Valarie!!

Ann, I may suggest you to collect for first all the possible U.S. records so you might be able to detect the exact birth place of your ancestors...
Ancona is both a province and a town, so maybe they should have been born in the Ancona Province...
Moreover we are talking about early records.. :?
Don't forget that Minia stated she was born in Turkey - Smyrne.

This afternoon I read a lot of newspaper's articles about the sad and interesting story of Isotta Oaksmith (I realized too that her brother Raniero died on December 24, 1878)...
She had a really hard life with her husband and she lost her child...

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper4 ... ehtml&.pdf

from Wikipedia:

With his first wife, Isotta Rebecchini, Oaksmith had 4 children,:

Buchanan Oaksmith (died in infancy)
Elizabeth (Bessie) Oaksmith 1858–1879
Corrine Oaksmith 1860-1879
Peyton "Randolph" Oaksmith.

From fultonhistory.com:

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper% ... ehtml&.pdf

APPLETON OAKSMITH.
His Four Daughters Drowned.
WILMINGTON, N. C , July 6.—Captain
Appleton Oaksmith, as reported yesterday,
started on Friday with his four
daughters and sou from Fort Macon to
Beaufort. The boat sank, and the eldest
daughter was drowned. Later advices
state that the three rescued daughters
afterward died.
NEW YOBK, July 6 —Appleton Oaksmith
was a slave trader and blockade
runner in the early part of the war. He
and Captain Gordon were arrested together
in 1861, for slave trading, and
Gordon was hanged ; but Oaksmith escaped
from Warren street jail, in Boston,
where he had been transferred from
Fort Lafayette. His first wife, the
mother of his eldest daughter, lives in
this city. Eighteen years ago she and
her child were saved from drowning.
While Oaksmith was a fugitive from
justice in England, he obtained what
purported to be an Indiana divorce from
his first wife, although she was unaware
of it for years afterwards. Oaksmith
then married a step-cousin. His applicattion
to President Johnson for pardon
was thwarted by his first wife who wrote
to the president the story of her wrongs.
Subsequently, however, he applied to
President Grant. His wife did not oppose
it, expecting that she would be
able to see her children, whom the Captain
had taken away from her, and his
pardon was granted. He returned from
England, settled in North Carolina,
being generally recognized as a conservative
Englishman, and was elected to
the legislature.

In another article you can read that Isotta went to visit her father in Smyrne (I believe it was at the time of her passport on October 1869)..

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper% ... ehtml&.pdf

He (Appleton Oaksmith) then told her he was
going with his vessel to the Indies, and advised
her to go to her father's for a while at Smyrna.

She went there, remaining four months, when
letters reached her father from the United
States, written by Captain Oaksmith's sister,
making inquiry about his daughter, saying that
she hadl disappeared, was believed dead, and
Captain Oaksmith had married again.

So, perhaps it's better before try to put togheter all these pieces and try to determine how many sisters and brother there were...

Hi Laura :D
I checked both James Mortimer and Marie on the basic town listing of births on NEHGS - they're very faded.
Both just state "Italy" for Giudetta
Can't find a marriage record :?

Laura,
What wuld I do without your help!! You and the group are wonderful!
Thanks so much.

On another note... the family story I received from my uncle about henry pierce (minias husband who was the seaman) Is that he died at sea coming up from Cuba going to NYC. He died while trying to save a cabin boy when the main mast fell on his head. His Body washed ashore and Frederick (their son) had to go and identify the body. Frederick knew it was his father because of a large tatoo of a cross on his chest. I have not found anything until yesterday Here is the article i found along with some other info. The dates of the article match up top the story and the census records I found . Minia lived with Joseph (Henry or Jh Pierce) in 1900 and she was widowed by the 1910 census where she lived with Joseph Raniero. I hope the article is related........ It sounds too good not to be!

Ann

I tried to attach the article and the forum woun't let me i have to figure it out somehow. The tiltle of the article is "Mate Pierce's body washed ashore"

Wow Ann!!!
Another coincidence?

FIVE PERISH IN A Wreck
Rescuers Unable to Reach the
Barkentine Abiel Abbott.
Vessel Pounds to Pieces -
Off Harvey Cedars —
Four of the Crew Are Saved on a Raft.

TOMS RI'VER. N. J.. Jan. 21.—The Ameri-
ican barkentine Abiel Abbott, salt laden,
from Turks Island to New York, beached
off Harvey Cedars last night and went to
pieces. Of her crew of nine only four are
living. ..........
........
Besides the Captain, those brought were Second Mate Butler, Otto Beng, James Burns, and Frank Leaven. Leaven,
besides suffering from cold and exposure
like the rest, was badly brulaed and hir ribs were broken, apparently by falling wreckage when the masts gave. way. He
lived only a short time. The men lost were
First Mate Pierce, Steward Charles Palmer,
James Brandt, and Frank Carter.

You're lucky to have such a fascinating family history! Really you must consider to write a book on it....

Laura

edit to add: were you able finding Minias's 1880 census? I'm having no luck on this!

Laura,

YES YES YES!!! I too have seen that article just yesterday! In fact there is book called "Rescued by the US Coastguard" that gives a detailed account of what happened on the ship when it was wrecked. I saw the book online but was unable to copy the story because of copyright laws. etc...

I have not had any luck either with Minias census of 1880 Perhaps a birth record of Joseph Raniero being born in NYC on August 10 1880 would help... but like you, I am stuck. I'm sure that would lend us to more clues as well. I'm looking forward to receiving the cemetary info soon too.

Thanks,
Ann

Re: looking for Rebecchini UPDATE!

Post by luckyshamrock »

Laura,

Remember me?

Wanted to give you an update on the latest news..........

I just got word from the cemetery where Minia is buried and she is buried with her brother Raniero, infant son Salvatore Pierce, daughter in law who died during childbirth (Alice Pierce) and Joseph Henry Pierce, the first mate who died on the Abiel Abbott!!! The dates all match up along with my Uncle's story about his body washing ashore etc!

Thanks again for your help a few weeks back! I believe Serafino Rebecchini was buried over in Italy or Turkey. I have not found any more records on him yet, but I am still looking!

Take care,
Ann
