Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Hello,
I am looking for information on the parents of my great grandmother Aurora "Nora" (LAMANA) MANGINI. She was born in 1908 in Pennsylvania and her mother was Rosa LAMANA (1876 (?) - (?)) born in Italy. Her father was Nicolas MANGINI, all I know about Nicolas, was that he was born in Italy and was arrested and executed in Philadelphia when Nora was a baby (abt. 1909-1911). Rosa remarried James CONSTANZA. I found Rosa and James on the 1920 census in Philadelphia with Nora and again in 1930 without Nora. Also listed in 1930 is Maria LAMANA as James' mother-in-law.
I am looking for any information on Rosa or Nicolas. I am not sure if they were married in Italy before coming to the USA or they met in the USA.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Jim Mirra

Re: Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Hi Jim!
On the site http://search.labs.familysearch.org/rec ... tml#p=home
There is a death certificate for a baby (4 years old) named Argis? Mangeri, son of Nicola Mangini and Rosina De Feis .
The children died on October 1911.
Are you sure that Lamanna was Rosina's maiden name, is it possible her mother used her maiden name?

Re: Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Laura,
I have come across that record before. I wasn't sure because I was always told that Nicolas Mangini was executed when my Nora was a baby, so I always assumed that it was around 1910. The maiden name of Rosa is unknown to my family. But, because of the 1930 census that has Maria Lamana as James Costanza's mother-in-law, I assumed that was her last name.
It guess it could be her mother's maiden name. I'm trying to get more information. I have sent away for Nora's birth record. Hoping for a maiden name for Rosa, or at least an age of Nicolas.
Thanks,
Jim

I have checked that site. I also went to the Philadelphia City Archives building and looked up lists of executions in Philadelphia up until 1916 without any luck.

From Ancestry.com:

Coming from Padula - Salerno Province - Campania region, being widow it's strongly possible that she travelled under her maiden name as in Italy women retain their maiden name for all their lifes even if married.

Thanks Val!
I don't know if all these last records are matching but I just found this 1904 arrival manifest, I believe it should be interesting for your search:
Rosina Barra, Single, travelling from Paduli (Benevento Province - Campania region) with her father De Feis Luigi (possible step-father?) age 57, barber, going to Phila to join her mother Maria living 1506 South 2nd Street.
In the declaration for Luigi De feis, in a first time he declared to join his wife Maria same address but near there is a post-annotation "Rel." for relative.

So, there is a Paduli in Benevento Province and Padula in Salerno Province....same region, Campania, maybe one was mispelled...

Re: Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Thank you Valarie, I really hope that these records are correct for Jim...
However, I noticed that many on the Barra's coming from Italy to U.S. were from Padula, so possible this is the right place
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padula
It was the birth town of Giuseppe Petrosino's parents...
Laura
p.s no luck with the 1910 census... it sure may have important details...

Re: Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
Laura and Valarie,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your search results are amazing! I talked to my grandmother today and she said that my great grandmother Nora did have 2 brothers. One named Adio (sp?) that died as a young boy and another that was called Al that died around 1963.
I think that these records are correct for my family. The only thing that is puzzling is that it has Rosina listed as Barra, traveling with Luigi De Feis but on the death certificate for her son Ardio, her name is Rosina De Feis. Is Barra a middle name, or do you think Luigi was not her real father?
Thank you again,
Jim

Re: Help with Finding my great grandmother's family
I just received a copy of Nora's Social Security Application and she listed her mother as Rose De Feis!
