Mazzilli (Mazzillo) and Amato family in Bari Italy

Post by lujak215 »

Looking for ancesters from Bari Italy. Mazzilli (o) and/or Amato (i) families.
I do know some names that my grandmother used to mention. Filipi, Allesandro, Michael, Donata.

Potenza, Basillicata, are some names I remember also. I know I am missing something else.

Please e-mail me at lujak215@comcast.net

If you read the web site on how to do your own Italian Genealogy Research you will then be in a position to ask us questions which we can assist you with in achieveing your research objectives ..Its a short read and very helpful. You do not need to know italian as their are form letters in italian for you as well.

The website is http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... earch.html

Hello Mary!
I was looking at some of your older posts on the genforum board.
Not sure how many US records you've found for your family.
If this record belongs to your aunt, it may help identify your family's town of origin in Italy.
Does this ship manifest look correct?
Thanks!
Valarie

Hello Mary :D ,
We'd be happy to look for more records:

Do you know your grandfather Philip's (Filippo) parent's names.

Did Philip have any brothers or sisters that came to the US?
Do you know his brother's or sister's names?

Also, was Philip born about 1900 or earlier?

Thanks! Valarie

If your family arrived in NY before 1925, many of our members use this search site:
http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
You may have to search using 'partial' and 'sounds like' name searches, names on manifests could be mistranscribed
Also, women generally traveled under their maiden names

Mary,
Here are some names that your mother may recognize
Possibly her father Philip's (Filippo) brother Raffaele?
Raffaele's 1st son is Donato (Dan), 1st daughter Mary.
If he followed traditional Italian naming patterns, these would be Raffaele's & possibly Philip's parents' names.
If your mother recognizes this family it may help in the search for your grandfather's manifest, etc

Hi Mary,
Raffaele Mazzilli's family in 1920
Names are again tough to decipher

Best guess, Raffaele is your grandfather Philip's brother
His children would be your mother's 1st cousins (including Libero, Lee Mazzilli's father)?

son Faber (Fred) Marsee 4, abt 1916 NY
son Albert Marsela 3 1/12, abt 1917 NY
son Lebran (Libero) Marsela 3/12, abt 1919 NY
---

Note: son 'Lebran' on the 1920 census, 'Gaho' on the 1930 census, may be Libero Mazzilli (1919-2007) who was ballplayer Lee Mazzilli's father.

This quote from a 2003 article in the Baltimore Sun about Lee Mazzilli may be referring to Libero and Libero's father Raffaele.
Raffaele Mazzilli was in the piano business on the 1930 census.
Mazzilli's grandfather had immigrated from Bari, Italy, and worked in the piano business, a trade he passed on to his son, Libero, who was a piano tuner and a professional welterweight.

Finding out more: Mazzilli's chicken store. My mother remembers her one of her uncles name as Sam. There were twins in the family, a few sets I believe. Two hairdressers, etc.

to continue with the rest of my family.

Would also like to see my grandmothers side. She would be Luigina Amato (i) listed above. I do know she once told me her mother's name was Donna and her fathers name was Michael. Her brother was also listed above as Alessandro Amato and I believe he was an electrician??

Thank you
