Hello Trish,
I will be writing away for those records from San Stefano this coming week. Thanks for that info. You have been very helpful getting me started.

I wonder if i can ask some more info. I'm am a novice to this type of research, and it is difficult to evan know sometimes the right question to ask. Please bear with me. I thought I would send this in narrative form and maybe you can weed through it for me and put me on the straight and narrow. LOL!!
i would like to find out if records are available for the following information. I went through my records and came up with this narrative of info that i received from both my mother and my grandmother and her sister many years ago. My great aunt passed away in 2001 at 91 years old, so i did manage to get some info from her.

Anyway, my great grandfather was named either Vincenzo 'James" Golla or Gallo. My mother and great aunt thinks they may have been Gallo bit changed it to Golla when they got here. who knows for sure. They didnt talk about this information i my family. He was born in San Stefano January 10, 1880. Which one i dont know yet. He supposed to have come to America in 1895 with either his uncle, or brother and/or a few friends to work up in New York.
He stayed here for several years, then went back to Italy in about 1903-1904 and married Angela Fontanone and returned to the U.S. around 1904 to the Scranton Pa, Nanticoke Pa area. My grandmother was born in Nanticoke in 1905 and all of her brothers and sisters were apparantly born there. Vincenzo was known as James, which seems odd. But all records I have of him refer to him as James. He was a coal miner there.
My grandmother had told me they lived there in Nanticoke Pa. till about 1923 when they moved to Vineland NJ. Thats where she met and married my grandfather and where my mother was born.

I'd like to know if there is records available to see if they actually did come in during this period of time and if they really did live where my records say.

Any information, web sites or direction would be helpful.

It’s not a problem looking up information for you. Also, that’s what this forum is for. It’s here to help everyone with finding their ancestors.

Now, I checked the Federal Census for you. I found Vincenzo (aka-James) in the 1910 and 1920 in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. Then I found them in the 1930 Census in Vineland, New Jersey. I have copies for you if you want them. There are various spellings for him such as Golla, Gola, and Gallo.

In the Ellis Island I found the following information:
Vincenzo Gallo arrived on November 26 1904, age on arrival 24, the ship’s name is La Savoie, port of departure Le Havre, Seine-Inferior France. He came with his wife, Angela, age 25. They were from San Stefano going to Scranton Pa. He was also in US from 1895-1904.

In 1895, I have him coming in on September 24, 1895, on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm II. He left from Genoa. His age was 15, and it looks like he is going to Paterson. There is also an Aurelio Gallo on there age 32. Does this look familiar? The age matches up to your Vincenzo and especially since the in 1904 manifest states he was here in 1895 so this a good chance it could be him.

Now remember, depending on the transcriber, the name could have been Golla but they put Gallo instead.

I just checked out the links you sent me. i registered on the ellis island web site too. Wow. there is alot of info out on that web site. I'm going to try my other relatives to see if any of them pop up.

It looks like you were right on the mark!!!! I'm sure that is him, on both of years. Airello was his older brother. I remember my grandmother speaking of her uncle with this name. She said he came here, but she wasnt sure when or with whom She also said she thought he had died in a mining accident.

Yes please send me those census records via email. i would really like to see what you found. Is there someplace, a web site or something that has the census records available for all to see? Or do you have to have a subscription to this service?

Dear Luca,

I'm glad everything was a help to you. It's seems some of the information jogged your brain some, that's good. We all need to write down whatever information our relatives give us as well as we have to pick their brains too.

Any way, about the Federal Census. They are online at Ancestry.com and Geneaology.com. However, you have to pay in order to use them. The good news is that most of the Main Libraries have Ancestry.com online free of charge, but you might have to wait to get on the computer. Most of the Family History Centers have Ancestry.com online also.

With the Federal Census, depending on the year, you can find how old a person is, when they came to the USA, when they were naturalized, how old they were when they were married, how many children were born and how many died, occupation, even an address, and the list goes on.

However, the only downfall is that sometimes the Surname was so badly butchered that you might have a hard time finding your relative. But don't let that scare you, there are always a way to get around it!

I use Alta Vista - Babel Fish Translation. http://world.altavista.com/tr

I'm sure there are many other Translators out there. Maybe some one will be kind enough to tell you what they use.

Also, I recommend a good Italian Dictionary.
