Antoinette (a) Greco

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Antoinette (a) Greco

Post by ckolesa »

Hello, I am looking for more information about my great grandmother maiden name Antoinette Greco. She was born about 1853-1856 in Italy somewhere in the Naples area. She married Antonio Perrotta(e)(i) and emigrated to New York City in 1887. Trying to find a birth certificate or the Town in which she was born.

I read your other post:

http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... 13593.html

and I believe this is the arrival manifest for Antonietta (travelling with her child Maria, female age 10 and Raffaele, male age 8):
It was normal she was travelling under her maiden name as in Italy women retain their father's lastname for all their lifes even if married....
Unfortunately, being an early manifest, place of birth or last residence are not listed.... :?

Thank You for the information. How did you ever find it? Each time I look into my background, I find out something new. It is the first time I see a daughter mentioned (Maria) I wander if she died enroute or after arrival. All later information that I have says nothing about her. Do you know how to get information from the differnt towns in Italy. some of my information mentions Cimitino, Italy. I am wondering if that is where she is from. I would also like to find out more information about my grandfather who I believe is from Salerno. Thank you again.

This really makes my heart beat fast, it really looks like it could be. I grew up at 661 w 187th street but never remember my grandparents mentioning her sister or brothers for that matter. I can only vaguely remember her mentioning an albert (brother). It looks like they changed their name to sound more american. I don't know why people were so secretive about their families in those days. It was the same with my father the baby of 12. He never mentioned his family. He wouldn't let any of us learn to speak italian. He was forced to come here by his father and never contacted him after he arrived. I have since found them in trieste and visited his uncle who cried when he met me. He was the same age as my father when he left. He was the son of the oldest brother. I would love to reconnect with my mother's ancesters. Grazia

No, I have no death certificates. I did notice that they were born in Pa. Interesting. Perhaps it was because of his occupation that they moved there for awhile. I have to put all this information together that I have and see what I need to know next. Grazia.
