G-Grandfather Pagano

Post by RJRagone »

Hi, I'm new to this site and looking for direction. My G-Grandfather, Agostino Pagano came thru Ellis Is. Aug. 12, 1895, he was single, 21 years old and departed Europe from Havre, France. How would I find out what part of Italy he was from so I can do some more digging.

If not listed on ship's manifest, it may be listed on naturalization records...if he naturalized...also draft registration of 1917/1918 and 1942.

Dear RJ he appears to come from Bargagli, Genova Province, Liguria region in Italy. Currrently there are 21 Pagano listed inthe Bargagli telephone directory at www.paginebianche.it putting in Pagano inthe first line and Bargagli in the second line and click CERCA.

Should you wish to know more about Bargagli then go to the following website. www.tuttitalia.it/liguria/23-bargagli and scroll down to MUNICIPIO for the address where you can obtain documents of birth, marriage or death free of charge by writing to the Ufficio di Stato Civile at that address.

Go to http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html for the form letters in Italian. =Peter=

Thanks for the information!! I haven't seen any information about a second trip. That is new information and the birth year seems to be right. Thanks again for all your help on this! This is my grandmother's father, my grandfather is also from the Genova/Savona area......but that's another search.

Thanks for looking Biff!! Being a newbie and thinking that I was only looking at my g-grandfather's roots, I didn't provide needed data. Agostino married Corine?, I know she went by Cora, in New York, sometime around 1905, he was around 29 and she was 17. She immigrated to America when she was 3 and her maiden name was Demarkis or Demarchis, not sure on the spelling. I think she was from Guazzolo, Italy, a small village east of Torino, but not sure. Sorry for the lack of information. I'm still gathering..............

Thank you very much Valarie!! I'm pretty sure that these are the right records. The names sure are strange though! In the 1910 census, the name Marie is right and in the 1920 it's "Mafalda"?!?!? And the different spellings of Demarkis, or whatever it's supposed to be....it's a wonder peoples roots can be found! And, thanks also for the free sites, I've been to Ellis but not too many others. It seems that most want a credit card before you can look at anything.

Marie (Pagano) Ragone was my dad's mom, she was born in New York. My dad's father, Anthony George Ragone was born in Italy around 1906, not sure where, he jumped ship in New York sometime around 1921 and was WOP until WWII broke out. He joined the Army and received his citizenship papers. I have tried to get his Social Security Application, but was unsuccessful. I thought that might list his home town in Italy. I know at some point that I will need to start writing to parts in Italy, I'm just not sure where to write yet.

Ahhh, so many mysteries and so little time!

Thanks again to all who have helped!! The journey continues........

RJ,
I'm glad we found some records for you - they should have a few clues you can use for locating the vital records you're missing.
I think you'll like the NYC search sites.
Don't worry too much about census names, ages, and immigration information - it all depended upon who was giving the information to the enumerator, how much they knew or remembered, whether or not they could make themselves understood and whether or not the census enumerator was diligent in doing their job  .
De Marchis/DeMarchis may be the correct spelling.

Hi Valarie :D ! Nice finds.

RJ,
Since the Pagano family records Valarie found are for your family, the WWI draft card, 1910 census and marriage records I posted for Agostino (Augustino) Pagano are incorrect; also the manifest wldspirit located for Agostino Pagano is not your great grandfather's.

Should we be looking for a ship manifest for Andrea rather than Agostino Pagano??
