Looking for info on DiMaria family

Post by phorsenuf »

Hello to all.

I've hit a wall n my search as I have been unable to get some info from relatives.

I'm trying to find some information about Joseph (Guiseppe) DiMaria. What I do know is he was born around June 29, 1840 in Termini Imererse, Sicily. He had 4 sons. Salvatore, Joseph, Cyril and Patsy (Pasquale?) I know he was a shoemaker and immigrated to America around 1913. He may have traveled with Salvatore (which is my great grandfather). I know Salvatore eventually settled in Waterbury but not too sure when, sometime before the 1930 census though. Guiseppe lived to be 99 but not sure where he settled.
My grandfathers birth record show he was born in CT but the 1930 census has him listed as being born in MA.

Can anyone help and give me some leads or ideas of where to search (without paying too much).

I'm trying to find out Guiseppes wife's name and maybe even his parents.

Salvatore did marry a Maria Cusimano (Cusumano) in the US. But he died at an early age and she remarried a Mollica.

I hope my information was helpful.

Thanks so much! Cathy

Hi Cathy! :D

It's almost illegible but I believe this should have been the 1913 arrival manifest you are referring to...
It shows Giuseppe Di Maria (age 75?), widowed, travelling with his son Francesco (age 35?), single, coming from Termini (Imerese) and joining their sons and brothers Salvatore and Giuseppe in CT, Waterbury?

I'm trying to find out Guiseppes wife's name and maybe even his parents.
From the military enlistment for the First World War you can see the birth date for Salvatore:

from Ancestry.com:
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Salvatore Dimaria
Name: Salvatore Dimaria
City: Waterbury
County: New Haven
State: Connecticut
Birthplace: Sicily;Italy (Termini Imerese)
Birth Date: 4 Nov 1887
Race: Caucasian (White)
FHL Roll Number: 1561978
DraftBoard: 3

[img=http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/7171/d ... wwi.th.jpg]

you can contact you nearest family History Center and ask to rent the microfilm for the Civil registration of the town of Termini Imerese (Palermo Province - Sicily region)...
You'll be able to search by yourself for example in the births acts and find Salvatore's birth document... on the Act there are listed his parents's names...

Link to find you nearest center:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

link to find the town microfilmed:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... umns=*,0,0

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Fracesco Dimaria
Name: Fracesco Dimaria
City: Waterbury
County: New Haven
State: Connecticut
Birth Date: 21 Apr 1877
Race: White
FHL Roll Number: 1561978
DraftBoard: 3

[img=http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5135/d ... wwi.th.jpg]

Hope this helps!
Laura

an acquaintance Laura has an excellent website and database of Termini vital records and family groups located here:

Termini Imerese . org

There is a membership fee to access the database of transcribed vital records 1820-1910, but in your case I would imagine it well worth the money.

If you contact her, I have no doubt Laura will help you, she's done a wonderful job bringing Termini Genealogy online.

Pink!

That's fantastic information. You must be a better searcher on Ancestry.com because I missed some of that. I would have to say the draft card is right because it's dated 1917 (I believe) and says he has 2 boys. His daughter wasn't born until 1918. It says he had a haunchback, if I read that correctly. I wonder if that made him ineligible to serve. I know nothing about when or how he died. It had to before 1921 because his wife remarried a Joseph Mollica and had their first child in1921.

Everything else you provided makes complete sense but I can't connect the Francesco anywhere. The ages indicate a son but there was not Francesco, unless he went by Patsy.

It's very possible that the Joseph next store could be my Dad's brother and his family.

This is great info. I'll have to find out about Pond St. and South Main. Thanks so very much! Now to find out the wives names.

I finally got in touch with my great Aunt and she was so happy I was doing this because she knows once they go (they are in their 80's) that all this will go with them. She said didn't know much because she really didn't pay attention when her mom would talk about, just like all kids I suppose.
But once I started asking questions about some things I found bits and pieces started coming back to her. When I listed off the names of the Joseph family next door she remembered some of the names so I was able to tie that together. She remembered them living on Galvin St and sure enough in a census there they were. Nobody remembers a Francesco though. I can't tie that piece in and it's driving me nuts.

As for my great grandfather Salvatore he's a complete mystery. Aside from the registration card you linked me to, I can't find anything else. I may have o gleam all my further information from his brother Joseph.

I was also told that South Main turns into Pond St so there's that link.

This is fun but it sure can be frustrating at times!

Well....

just for reference here is the 1930 census for Salvatore's wife, remarried to Joseph Mollica:

1930 United States Federal Census
about Mary Mollica
Name: Mary Mollica
Home in 1930: Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut
View Map
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1895
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Spouse's Name: Joseph
Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Joseph Mollica 61 head
Mary Mollica 35 wife
Joseph Demaris 16 step-son, born in CT
Cyril Demaris 14 step-daughter? born in CT
Mary Demaris 12 step-daughter, born in CT
Josephine Mollica 9 daughter
Dennis Mollica 7 son
Ida Mollica 5 daughter

[img=http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/4467/mol ... 930.th.jpg]

All Salvatore's child were born in CT, his military enlistment (June 1917)shows him living on 645 South Main street... working in a clock shop...
Have you noticed that the Frank/Francesco living with with his father Joseph stated he was living on 645 South main (on his military enlistment too) and was working in the "Waterbury Clock Co"... I believe this is more than a coincidence
Frank was single in the 1930 census, living with his father Joseph and was 53 years old.... maybe he didn't marry and nobody remember him?

You guys are good! I really need to learn how to search better at ancestry.com. I never came across that directory listing for Salvatore.

So much of all that makes perfect sense but it's so odd that nobody remembers the name Frank at all. My grandfather gave my sister this birth order. The birth years are what we can figure.

Joseph (1870)
Patsy (1885) or (1877 according to the census)
Salvatore (1887)
Ciro ????

I can't find a blessed thing on a Ciro at all!

Pasquale works although I have him born 3rd.

The back thing definitely raises some eyebrows. Frank has to be a brother. The black sheep perhaps. LOL

My sister theorizes that Salvatore, Frank and Guiseppe all lived together. Salvatore, which was my was my great grandfather, and lived there with his 2 sons and wife, Mary. After Salvatore died, Mary moved out with the 3 kids (a daughter Mary came in 1918).

I do know Mary was then fixed up with Joseph (Mollica) and they had their first child in 1921. So Salvatore had to have died between 1918 and 1921.

Pretty much all of the DiMaria family stayed in CT so I'm going to try and find out the family church. Maybe they would have a death record of Salvatore and the others.

I appreciate all your help!!!

Maybe ciro was Frank, maybe his first name was Francesco but the family called him Ciro (maybe his middle name?)..... This makes sense because I wasn't able to find a document for a Ciro Di Maria too.... :?

That's what my sister and I are starting to think as well. I think I've gotten her hooked on this so it's nice to share findings and have someone to brainstorm with. I'm going to keep searching for info on Francesco. Maybe I'll find something that has a middle initial.

My grandfather had a brother named Ciro as well. Looking at a couple posts on another message board his daughter had posted that his real name was Salvatore. I'm not convinced on that one since everything reads Ciro for him, including the Social Security death index. It gets so confusing when they keep reusing the same names over and over. LOL

Some mysteries have been solved!
There was a Francesco after all and no Ciro. They had a sister Grazie as well. Joseph was a Calogero, not a Guiseppe.
I talked with a cousin yesterday on the DiMaria side that had a lot of information. Strange thing is nobody can find anything at all about my great grandfather Salvaores death. There is no record anywhere. All we know is he died in 1918. He's not buried in the local cemetery, no death record at the church they attended, nothing. It's very bizarre.

Pink, I have a question for you. In an above post you found the manifest that Guiseppe and Francesco was listed. I cannot for the life of me find that anywhere on ancestry.com. Even doing a search for that ship on that day and I still cannot find them listed.
Is there a better way to search over there. I didn't find half the stuff you did there. I am a member so I assume I have access to everything. It can be quite frustrating at times.
