Hello!
Checked this site:
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html
Currently about 29 people in Stigliano with the spelling Mandile

No luck (so far) locating a manifest with the Mandile spelling

It could be.. The BC that I have is a faxed copy, my mother had the orig. and I have not been able to find that..
And Rose Fracasse (as posted in the Obit.)was her sister who passed away , also just one month ago Anita Mastrovito her daughter passed away in Calf. So most all who might be able to shed light have now passed, just their children are left to connect the dots.
My cousin Gail and I are the ones who are searching, I've been doing this for 15 years now I put it aside because I was having much more success with the rest of the family, but I need to finish it now, I have lung cancer and my kids are now 26 and 20 and I want them to have it finished..God willing..

Also the book by Lynn Nelson, "Discovering your Italian Roots"

Just ordered it on Amazon... :>)

Again Thank all of you so much...God Bless each of you for all the work you have done...

I am so sorry to hear of your condition, I'll keep you in my prayers.

We have the best team of researchers on the net, and I know that they will try their very hardest to locate information for you so that you can accomplish your goal. I've seen some amazing miracles at this site!!

With that being said, the variations of the name are many, but the name is specific to the town of origin as spelled in the obituary. Did you have a chance to see Vj's link??

I haven't checked any of the other ports Peter, but I am sure Vj has.
Nothing found so far or she would have posted it. If you can help that would be great, the more eyes the better our chances!! :D

Hello!
No doubt we have quite a few forum members looking for the missing records.
Peter, you’re right, the Castle Garden site is a great resource - sometimes their transcriptions are better than those on the Ellis Island site.
(so far I’ve tried Castle Garden, Ellis Island, ancestry. com for all ports)

These manifest(s) are tough ones to find.
Summary according to the 1910 census:
- Vito Dichiara born abt 1873-4, arrived abt 1904. This would be before daughter Maria was born…
- Grazia Mandile born abt 1873-4 and at least two children arrived abt 1907, before Anna and Anthony were born.
- daughters Rosina DiChiara (abt 1902) and Mariantonia Dichiara (abt 1905) arrived with their mother about 1907
- last residence may be Stigliano, Matera, Basilicata

Family history indicates that children Anna (abt 1908) and Anthony (abt 1909) were also born in Italy
---

Since we’re also missing the 1920 census, here’s another interesting one.

It’s in the Bronx with a mother Grace, daughter Rose and son Anthony.
This Grace is a widow but it indicates both children were born in NY…

interesting 1920 census

This census is a repost from the 1st page of the post for comparison:
This is an interesting 1920 census for a Catholic home.

Marie's name is similar to the 1910 census
Sister Anna is listed as being born in Italy
For both, the year of immigration is 1905 - which means Anna would have been born in NY
Both naturalized in 1917
Sister Rosa may have been married already?

interesting 1920 census
lines 20-21

I'm having no luck too finding the arrival manifests... :?
I just want to give a little advice...
Today Stigliano is in Matera Province, but at the time of Vito and Grazia emigrations the Comune of Stigliano was in the province of Potenza. (I believe Matera became Province in 1927)...
Maybe it could be possible they stated Potenza as place of origin on their arrival manifests ??

Hello Laura :D !
That really helps - I was trying some searches with 'no name' from Stigliano. I wondered why some of the transcriptions stated 'Stigliano, Potenza'.
Thank you!

Here's a possibility for Vito

possible 1905 manifest

3 Mar 1905 SS Lombardia, Naploi to NY
Line 30
Vito Di Chiara, 31 (abt 1873)
- married
- laborer
- last residence Stigliano
- destination NY
- joining brother-in-law Felice Fornabaio at 337 112th Ave
(note: did Vito have a sister?)

same manifest from Ellis Island site

Ok, First Thank you all so much..
What I have found out is :Anthony and Ann were born in NYC. I noticed that the original name was spelled Dichiaro. Interesting.
Yes, g- grandma was remarried to Frank Frankolino. They weren't married too long. She married him to get the girls out of the orphanage. I think he was abusive.

I found my grandparents wedding invitation..It says:
" Grace Deciana announces the Marriage of her daughter Mary Deciana to Nunzio Viviano, 1/23/1926 @ 7 pm @ St.Anthony's, Willow Street, Yonkers N.Y. Brides place of residence 14 4th Street, Yonkers N.Y. Future Residence NY City."
.Now where did that name ( Deciana)come in?? as I said They were married at St. Anthony's in Yonkers, So I'm going to try and see what the marriage certificate says..I called and need to send in writing what I want, names and dates, etc... The Church is no longer there but Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church has those records..A Letter went out today.

Now I think the date of arrival may be off by a few years since the last two children were born here..which make a difference..Anthony was two when he was killed, and he was the baby of the family..

My grandmothers date of Birth is 1904 so she must have been the infant that traveled with them.
So the date of arrival of 1905 just might be right.. which puts it 5 years earlier then I thought. I was thinking 1910.

"3 Mar 1905 SS Lombardia, Naploi to NY
Line 30
Vito Di Chiara, 31 (abt 1873)
- married
- laborer

(note: did Vito have a sister?)"

Yes, Vito did have a sister here in the US...Not sure when she came, I remember visiting her some time around 1960.we called her Mary..So I expect that was her name..
Now could that be the Felice Fornabaio?? It just might be..If I can find any thing on him, would it give his wife's maiden name???

This is where I remember hearing about an other sister and maybe two brothers.. They didn't come over..

Neat site wldspirit, you're right once you get into the site it won't go any further.

I can't think of another website that has different transcriptions.
I'm pretty sure Castle Garden, Ellis Island and ancestry are different.
The familysearch pilot links directly to the Ellis site I think
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/rec ... 7819#start

If their names are badly transcribed, I can't think of another site to use.

sweetpea

Thank you so much for the update :D !
Looked for Felice Fornabaio's records - he appears to be married to a Rose/Rosa. If we could find her manifest it would probably have her maiden name on it.

I've been thru several dozen manifest, and I really don't get it.....what are we missing here??
I've searched first names only for both Potenza and Stigliano....nothing so far. That they badly transcribed the last names, yes, but how badly can they transcribe Grazia.....even looked for Ma. Grazia..... :?

I don't know why the altreitalie site isn't working, in the past there have been manifest show up on that site that we couldn't find elsewhere.......wish it would come back up so that we can at least eliminate that possibility.

Need to take a break, serious eye strain.....keep up the great work!! :D

DECIANA
It does look like your surname was ‘americanized’
It appears to be the name on Grace’s 1920 census and Anna & Anthony's in 1930
repeated from above:
ediit: added 1930

And as wldspirit mentioned earlier there are a couple of NYC & Westchester county sites that may help:
http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/nymarri ... ndex=bride

Bride: Deciana Mary Dec 22 1925 7598 Bronx
Groom: Viviano Nunzio Dec 22 1925 Bronx 7598

Ordering NYC Vital Records
New York City Archives

Also, the Italian Genealogical Group has been updating their databases recently (direct link to IGG):
Naturalization: http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm
Vital Records: http://www.italiangen.org/VRECLIST.stm

---

Lee,
I know what you mean (along with everyone else that's been looking for this manifest :D )
I've looked at every Mar* and Ros* born 1905 +/-5yrs, immig 1904-1908 without success. Along with everyone from Stigliano, Matera, and Potenza between 1904 and 1908 (assuming the location was transcribed correctly)
The manifest is there somewhere, I just can't figure out the 'flaw' in the search 8O

Hi, Lee and Valarie,

Add me to the frustration and eye strain list trying to locate ship manifests for Grazia and children, and for Vito's sister, Mary/Rose/Maria Rosa/Rosa Maria. I'll try again after supper.

Baci,
Biff
