Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Our ROTOLO family is from Alia, Sicily. I have traced them in Alia back to 1850. I do not know if we are related to Rotolo families from other towns.
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Salvadore (or Salvatore) Panepinto was born to Giovannni Pietro Panepinto and Calegera Cortese on 23 Oct 1881. He married Paola Morana (b. 4 January 1885 to Giuseppe Morana and Filomena Bonfanti) 3 Oct 1914 in Alia.
The only additional Alia information I have is on the Morana family. Giuseppe Morana and wife Filomena Bonfanti had at least: Emmannuele, 1877, Salvatore, 1879, Emmannuele, 1881, Antonino, 1883, Paola, Salvatrice, 1887, Maria Grazia, 1891, and Rosalia, 1894.
Hi Nicole,
A quick search in "Italian-American Roots" (1851-1861) finds a likely birth date for Giuseppe Morana, (parents:Emmanuele Morana, age 23 yrs, shoemaker, and Paolo Mortellaro, age 20 yrs, residents of Alia) bn 18 April 1854 at 20 hrs; bp 19 April 1854; reg 18 April 1854; #66
It also has the parents marriage information, if you want it.
Now that I have their names, I'll check on your Panepinto lines next time I visit the archives.
An interesting note: "The first documented proof of a native of Alia arriving in Louisiana is ... in St Anthony's Church in New Orleans. On March 4, 1878, Giuseppe Panepinto, age 26 years, native of Alia, married Nunzia DiMaggio, native of Contessa."
I'll let you know what I find.[/quote]

Thank you!! That is very possible connection with the names Emmanuele and Paolo as parents. That is actually what I put as assumed parents by following the naming pattern!
I really need to schedule a trip to Clayton Library to do some more research.
Thanks again,
Nicole

Started looking into this family and found that they had at least one child:
Giuseppa Panepinto, b. 12 Dec 1879
Then, I found this:
Panepinto Wid. Nunzia 24 Ricca Giuseppe 26 02/11/1882
There were a couple of other Panepinto marriages/births in that time period, but I wasn't able to pull anything up for the 1880 census.
It seems more came in the 1890's, including a Frank Panepinto (his wife which may be Angeline and three children) and possibly a brother or other family member (married to Phyllis Ricotta, with one son, who married Anthony Rini). I think they came ca. 1893. There was a connection to Romano family, so it was a possibility. I am in contact with someone connected to the Rini part of the family.
BTW, I am looking into purchasing that Italian-American book. I have seen it before and even copied a few pages of Panepinto, but did not find mine for sure. It might be helpful to have on hand, though.
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
I put off buying it for months. After my 4th trip to the library to check a different family I decided I was easier to have my own copy. Once your lines are back to the 1860s it can be a huge time saver. I spent 2 months researching a roll of microfilm only to find every entry in this book. I was corresponding with Mr. Robichaux about other volumes of these records. He told me he was not planning to publish any more of the Alia records, as this book did not sell enough to pay for the printing. It is available from Hebert Publications. I copied Panepinto pages from the Baton Rouge La Diocese records index. Lots of names but none are an exact match for your family. I will post them as soon as I get them scanned.
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
I am also very interested in the sparacino family from sambucca area. please contact.
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
I'm very interested in exploring the Rotolo family origin in Alia. Let me know what your plans are for this and how I can be any help. Thanks.
Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Hello Bama, Welcome to this forum. My research on Alia families has stalled due to my life getting in the way. I have 3 new rolls of microfilm just waiting for me at our Family History Center. I intend to start looking at them tomorrow. My earliest record in the Rotolo line is Marino Rotolo, widower of Lucia Cirrincione, died 5 Oct 1860, age 48 years, native of Alia. That would place the family in Alia at least by 1812. What family names are you researching?bama wrote:I'm very interested in exploring the Rotolo family origin in Alia. Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Hello fellow Aliese,
My grandfather Salvatore Monteleone (b. 1880) arrived New Orleans 1902
His sister Anna Maria or Marianna Monteleone (b. 1878) arrived Ellis Island 1906
Brother Cosimo/Cosmo Monteleone (b. 1883) arrived New Orleans 1913
All were single. I have not been able to find any soild evidence of the Cosmo and Maria Anna in the US, only tantilizing clues.
Another brother Giuseppe b. 1870 married to Fortunata Sardegna of Lercara Friddi, and is said to have lived in the US for 12 years, and then went home to Alia. No sign of him here.
And yes I have checked the census of 1910, 1920, 1930, but only find my grandfather in the 1920 census.
Their mother was Cosima Damiana Tripi b. 1848, to Mercurio Tripi and Natala Barcellona
Father was Cosimo Maria Liborio Monteleone, b. 1834 to Giuseppe Monteleone and Maria Anna D'Aura
Related by marriage to:
Todaro, di Piazza, Dionisi, Costanza
If anyone is related or have any information about these people, please contact. I also have a lot of information to share if you have questions.

Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Hello CaliDon
I am hoping that this is your Cosmo.. maybe you have already seen it...?
Cosmo Monteleone
Birth: 4 Feb 1883 4 Feb 1883
Residence: Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware
Other: Wilmington City
Source: Military - World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
If you wish, I can link his registration record to a post for you to view.
It mentions "Cosmo Demiano Tripi" as the nearest relative, maybe it should be Cosima-his mother??

Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Could you please do that. I have seen this registration card partially. The name Cosmo Monteleone, birthdate 2/4/1883 and rel. live in Italy, and that was it. I have always thought it may be, now I know for sure. Please send the link. Yes, Cosima Damiana Tripi was his mother. thank you very much

You are right though, this family is hard to trace!!
It would be nice to find further info on the Monteleone's...
Do you know what happened to Cosimo after the war?
mfjp
p.s. it's always nice to see a signature of a "paesano" on a document...

Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
Thank you very much. This is my grandfather's brother. Someone emailed me a while ago that on the back side of his passenger card had him living in NYC, NY, but haven't verifed that
My family seemd to fly under the radar for a while
Thanks again. It's wonderful to be able to nail this aspect of his life down.
Also he, my grandfather and the sister claimed to be able to read and write on the passenger records. They must be telling the truth

Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families
I have a Morana update!!!
In 1910, Emmanuele, Antonino, Salvatrice, and Maria Grazia Morana are listed in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Per the census, Emmanuele immigrated in 1906, Antonino in 1907, Salvatrice in 1907, and Maria G in 1907. I was able to find Salvatrice and Maria Grazia's arrive aboard The Virginia 4 June 1907 thru Ellis Island. According to the manifest, they were headed to Jersey City, to what appears to be 374 (or 314) First Street (1910 census appears to show them at 378 Third Street.) It also shows relatives as brothers Emmanuele and Salvatore. I have not found Salvatore as of yet at all. I can not find any of the boys' arrivals thru Ellis Island. I assume another port, but right now do not have access to additional databases.
I have been told Tony Morana went to Argentina (do not know when or why) but cannot find him for sure after 1910 anyway. I also lose Emmaneule after 1910.
Salvatrice, who went by Lena (is this normal?) married Calogero Monachello and by 1930 was in Paterson, Passaic County, NJ. The two children I have inforation for are in Bergen County, NJ. Maria Grazia, who went by Grace, married Salvatore Filippone (from San or So Giovanni??, Italy and ended up in 1930 in Newark, Essex County, NJ and the children were all also in Bergen County, NJ (I believe some are still living there today). My cousin and I will probably be contacting some of them soon in hopes to find more information.
Currently, I also do not have any additonal information on youngest sis, Rosalia (b. 1894) I am also hoping to soon find additional information on their parents Giuseppe Morana and Filomena Bonfanti.
Thanks to the help here along with some old letters and Christmas cards my cousin found, I am finally putting this family together.
