So. I went down to the FHL today. I brought all the essentials...but should have brought a few more things. but that's ok. I'll bring 'em next time.

I found my GG grandfather's(Pasquale Zizza) birth record. (that was the easy part because i had his D.O.B.)....however, i could only make out bits and pieces of other info. the italian handwriting on the record was so hard to read! I incorporated the help of the FHL attendant and she and i tried to break down the record piece by piece...looking for key words and stuff....

The names listed on the record were hard to make out 100%....especially when it came to his mother's name.

This branch of FHL seemed to have outdated equipment...couldn't press a button to print out what you were looking at. I did bring my camera, but was unable to snap a decent photo....but i was able to take a MOVIE of it. I have since taken copies of the frames and am now analyzing it further. OY!

So i think my ggg grandfather's name was LUIGI...and Luigi's father was Giuseppe.....(was listed as a "fu") (luigi presented my gg grandfather pasquale...) I can read the mother's first name as Carlotta (cognome may be MAGNO)....( i was expecting the mother's name to be Concetta as that was the name of Pasquale's first born daughter) (Pasquale's first born son was Luigi)

The other people on the page, i assume, are the witnesses-their names are easy to read! GO FIGURE!

I was getting dizzy and "seasick" from scrolling...so i packed it in....I am going back on Wednesday when the "other lady" is there. I am told she is pretty good at reading records.

I guess not a bad thing for the first trip....OH. and the index was helpful too...i found a few other records i need to compare that could be siblings of my gg grandfather...

ciao!

Hello Lisa,

You may already have this, but here is the Italian-English birth record translation. The more of them you go through, the easier it will become. Good Luck!

Ciao,
Joe V.

Sorry....looks like the image is not coming through...e-mail me and I can send it to you....thanks!

Cubsy-

It's going to get a lot easier. You'll get used to the handwriting and all the other stuff with some practice.

Let me ask you this- is it a small town you are working in? If that's the case, you usually see a lot of the same names over and over again and with some time, you'll know what they all are. This is why I suggested filming the indeces. You can also film other records of people with the same name even if they are not related. Some of them may be written clearer on one record than they are on another.

As for the pics not coming out- it definitely can make a huge difference which camera you use. And you should put it in macromode to take closeup pics- and no flash. I use a panasonic Lumix which I think is the best for this purpose. If it's in your budget, maybe you can find a used one on amazon or ebay.

Hi,
I have been reading of your 1st experiences at the LDS center. I use the center in Bloomfield CT. The volunteers are generally very helpful, but their skills vary tremendously.
I was fortunate to meet a person who has been using this library for over 20 years. He helped me through the use of the equipment,(i.e. readers with their magnifications, printers, and scanners). He also read Italian and guided me toward where to find the name (most important) on the various types of documents.
When I find a document I think I may need, I note the index number on my tablet. At some point, I will go to the scanner and scan the images I have noted and load them onto my flash drive to eventually load to my computer. Once in the computer, I can blow up the image to view it more closely without a magnifying glass.
There are many occasions when the handwriting simply stumps me. That is when the wonderful people on the forum help me through the translations (handwriting & language).
If your site has a scanner, it will become your best friend. You will eventually find the records you seek, and then some, but capturing the images becomes paramount.
I hope your LDS center has the equipment you need. I assumed they all did, but it is sounding they are not all alike.
I wish you well on your journey. It is an exciting one.

I just stopped volunteering at The Bloomfield Center as a librarian. The trip got too much for me, over an hour. I had started working there at 18 years old many years ago, but then took a break for a while.

It is definitely a warm and helpful atmosphere with some great people working and researching there.

They have a SCANNER?

Wow! That must be awesome. I have been to the FHC in Newtown, CT and the equipment is (a few years ago, anyway) mediocre at best.

Let me know when. I go there often. Unfortunately, they have very limited hours. Hope to meet you.
You are right James. It is a nice atmosphere. You must know who I was referring to that helped me a great deal. Remember Tom?
I just assumed they were all the same. It sure sounds like I lucked out.
