@Jennabet
I do have a plane ticket for Jan 2012; you don't need an Italian passport to travel to Italy, I need my Italian passport to study/work in Italy and the EU...besides, this still did not help matters, I was told to wait and not count on leaving in Jan. When I say the Melb consulate are beyond difficult, I mean it. I am in a catch-22 with my work offer as the employer will only hire me with my Italian passport.
@Riccardo
I know my file number and I think the consulate sends the documents to Italy by registered post as I had to supply the envelope myself! I thought the documents would be sent via a safer, internal route, I'm a bit annoyed. I will PM you if I need a phone call made to the commune, thank you for your kind offer.
@grandpa77
The commune is Dinami
So my only choice is to thank my stars I am so close to the end and sit tight and hope the letter from the commune comes through quickly. Thanks for your comments!

@vanessam - I'm sure that you already know what having a contact in the comune can do to accelerate paperwork.
IMHO, having a job offer is one of the times when that contact could really help. Best of luck to you, and I hope your wait is a short one.

Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
Hi Vanessam, maybe you should keep contacting the consulate, as well as the comune for status updates and let the consulate know in advance that they can expect a call from you once a week. You don't want to go to Italy in January without your Italian passport.
My sig other submitted finterprints for his passport first week in October and his passport arrived in the mail last week. We are leaving for Italy in two weeks. But we worked with San Francisco consulate. Eleven years ago, I was recognized myself by Philadelphia. I also had a plane ticket and they came through with my passport but I did have to keep calling them with reminders.
Good luck. Try bugging them a little.

@Jennabet
Def not leaving Aust without my Italian passport!
Congrats on everything working out with your significant other's passport....that seems that an acceptable time frame. Are you moving to Italy? Good luck with everything and I will keep the forum updated!

Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
Yes, moving to Italy. I'm returning after living there for almost ten years. He has made several trips but has never lived there so it will be a new experience for him. However, no matter how many times you've done an international move, it's still a big task.
Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
I have another question - when I get the recognition letter from Italy, can I take this letter and apply for a passport to any Italian consulate or do you need to apply for the passport where you started the process, i.e. Melbourne in my case. I am asking because there is also a serious backlog of passports being issued. If I got my letter tomorrow, the next available appointment to apply for my passport in Melbourne is Feb 2012. In the scheme of things, it's not that bad but I am desperate!!
Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
Vanessem, if you reside legally in the jurisdiction of the Melbourne consulate, you must apply for your passport with the Melbourne consulate. The only way you could apply elsewhere is if you physically relocate to the jurisdiction of another consulate and be able to prove you are legally resident there.
By the way, we moved over to Italy on November 8 and are now settled in. If the following information can help anyone unfamiliar with the process of relocating to Italy, here are the steps we followed:
. Arrived, stayed a few days with relatives while we looked for a permanent place.
. Signed a rental contract with our Landlady.
. Took rental contract, Italian passports and codice fiscale (obtained before we left) to the bank and opened accounts.
. Received "registered" rental contract from landlady and took that document along with Italian passports and codice fiscale to the Comune to apply for residence, which I already have but he does not.
Once residence is granted, he can go to Tessa Sanitaria and select his primary physician and be added to the national healthcare role.
If you follow these steps in the same order, you should not have any problems obtaining residence.

Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
Thanks for your advice Jennabet, I will be staying here in Melbourne until the letter arrives so I can apply for my passport.....not leaving until I have it all sorted!
Nice to hear from you and glad it's so far, so good for you and your husband.
Will let you know how it all goes at my end too....let's all be in agreement (happy vibes) that it is a straight forward process that does not take six months!!

Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
Good luck to you Vanessem. In my opinion, if you're Italian and you have an opportunity to live in Italy as a citizen, it's the very best place to be.

Re: Citizenship approval process via Italy?
when you say apply for residence , is it possible a commune can tell you that you can't live there?
