Carpathia crew manifest help please?

Sometimes, people were held in quarantine upon arrival...for a lot of reasons...

When they were released, they did not enter on the manifest of the ship they arrived on initially...their name entered a passenger manifest of another boat arriving at about the time of their release. This was to help keep the paperwork straight so someone in quarantine for months would not enter the US on a manifest that was out of date. They were simply re-assigned to another ship's manifest. They may never have been on the second ship at all.

Likewise, if the bordered in one place and the ship had an intermittant stop like Cuba, or South America...and that ship was not going on to New York directly, they may have transferred to another ship.

All this might not apply, but you need to take it into consideration. Sometimes people traveled on one ship, but the passenger manifest they are listed on is of another ship. It is important to bear this in mind. They may never have known that their arrival record was not on the ship they thought it was. It happened a lot.

Who is the Giovanni Cergnul who arrived NY August 8, 1920, out of the port of Trieste? Age 25, born Albona, hired on July 15, 1920 in Trieste, is a fireman, and described as being 5-8 and 160 lbs. On the ship Argentina. Is this a different Giovanni since he is in the 1920 census of Ill? or did he continue to travel on ships after moving to Illinois? Or is this simply how he paid his passage from a visit to Italy??????

So many questions, so few definative answers! (But what a ride!)

As mentioned... I need to review everything ... manifests that do carry info about their weight and height is helpful...

I'm not sure if this Giovanni is the same as John in the census...

Hello Everyone,

I am sorry about the delay in answering, I have three small children that needed mommy for awhile.

Okay I checked the 1920 census again to see if maybe I missed something. Under the immigration section it says "1914 and AL"


Then I rechecked the 1930 census and in that section of this census it says "1914 and PA"

Now I am assuming that in 1920 he was saying that he came here in 1914 and was still an alien. Then in 1930 he was saying that he came here in 1914 and he was naturalized in Pennsylvania (PA).Am I correct in assuming that?


So here is what is really confusing me.I have a Certificate of naturalization and it is from St.Louis, Missouri dated march 1, 1940

Essgee is the forum member who pointed out the physical description...

The info you have is of a Giovanni who is shorter and skinnier... it doesn't match with the manifests I posted... (mainly showing spelling alternatives)

Am going through the Carpathia 1913 records... maybe he is listed as a regular passenger and not crew...

There are over 400 pages to zoom through.. (not as bad as it sounds)....

But the Carpathia must have been some huge ship... eh?

3 small kids that need Mommy hmmm (all boys...?) can relate... though mine may be a little older.. and they still need their Mommy...

Just some words of advice... don't let the research consume you... I've been there...

Try five boys, and they are stair step as well......the oldest is soon to be 22 and the youngest 16........almost done......
I remember to well how exhausting they can be........but just think, school is around the corner!!!
