I was hoping to verify that Cristobal Balestrieri actualy participated in WWI, I was looking for his registration into the military. As the story goes he served on a Hospital ship. but not sure.

Dear Sanguinetti, in order to get his military record I would need his place of birth, date of birth (or at least approx. year of birth) and names of parents (if available), so I would know where it is kept his record
Please let me know
bye Riccardo

Hi!

Thank you for the link to the list.

I just found this website and i used your link.

For the first time i now know the birth and death dates of my grandfather Vittorio Bruno from Sicily who died in WW2.

These dates have been lost for my family.

Regards
Paolo Bruno

Riccardo,

I was just wondering, how long does it take to receive a reply? I know it is a bit early to expect anything yet, but do you know the usual waiting time? Thanks.

Hi Riccardo. I have a small problem. I would like the military record for my grandfather (b. 1846) who served in the military during the period about 1860-1870?? The problem is the family lived in Roccapiemonte and later moved to Castellammare di Stabia about 1858. Even though he was born in Roccapiemonte, he and his brothers registered for the draft in Castellammare di Stabia. I have the liste di leva for all but do not have the service record for my grandfather. The brothers did not serve and were given a waiver because he was in service.

The Salerno Archives does not have any of the service records. I also wrote to the Naples Archives and they referred me back to Salerno. How do I find his service record?

There is an online database for Castellammare di Stabia on www.familysearchlabs.org

Go to Italy Napoli Province Municipal Records. Once you click on that, you will see the town name come up. Click on the town name and you will see that they have military registers online.

If Salerno has not, it means there isn't any.
At that time, military service was compulsory and for 5 years, so many young guys were diserter, and many didn't do the service to become BRIGANTI. Briganti are those who, since didn't want to serve the new state of Italy, to escape, they would become, thief.
I'm not saying your ancestor was a thief, but that is the only reason why there are not many military records of that time.
I suggest you to make a research about BRIGANTAGGIO and BRIGANTI
I hope it helps

I know you have liste di leva (military draft card)
Lista di leva is a record stating the check up of the young guy, it just states if he is helathy enough to leave for the military service (compulsory at that time for 5 years).
Being drafted doesn't mean he left for military service.
Maybe he moved to go somewhere else, to avoid it.
I hope I was clear this time

My grandfather was in active service when my uncles registered for the draft. Because he was in active service at that time they were given a waiver to serve.

At this point it means that the record could be lost or destroyed or burned or swapped away from flood.
I'm sorry for that
