All I had to submit was my grandfather's Italian birth certificate, his naturalization certificate (from the 1950s, by which time my mother was already an adult), his U.S. marriage certificate, my grandmother's U.S. birth certificate, my parent's birth certificates, their marriage certificate, and my birth certificate. There was no question about the year my grandfather immigrated. Of course, I confirmed my citizenship in the early 2000s, when it wasn't even necessary to visit the consulate in person.
