Mother: Margarita Ottaviano, daughter of living Francesco, farmer, born in Rocca D'Arazzo, resident in Cerro Tanaro, Luigi's wife.
Side note: On Nov 7, 1896, record #12, married to Eugenio Massetti in Cerro Tanaro.

This is very interesting. If true, this means that Solveig Gunbjørg Jacobsen (born 8 October 1913 in Grytviken, South Georgia was NOT the first person to be born and raised south of the Antarctic Convergence.

Interesting.... Thank you for that info, Carlos. Hopefully Teresa's naturalization records will confirm her correct place of birth. Without knowing this it would be quite some mission to search through all the Sante Fe Birth/Baptism Records, if that is in fact where she was born. Unfortunately not all of them have been indexed yet.

Meanwhile there are a lot of records on Family Search that can be searched for further info about Teresa Massetti's ancestors.

I can find no support for the "South Sandwich Islands" claim of birth for Teresa Massetti, but that has been a family story for years and I don't know why. I did not enter that birth location on Ancestry--another person whose family tree intersects with mine entered the information. I have messaged her to ask where she got that information, but no answer yet. Thanks for checking with the SSI registrar, though. That pretty much confirms that story is just a story. Thanks, Emily

Hi,
My grandmother, Teresa Massetti, was born in Argentina in 1898. Her parents arrived there in 1897 from Italy and stayed in Argentina for several years before returning to Italy. I can find zero documentation for her birth.

In my experience US naturalization records can help a lot in narrowing down a birth record search. Did Teresa naturalize with her parents? Look for three types of records on each of Jim, Catterina and Teresa (ie 9 records total)

declaration of intent;
petition for naturalization; and
certificate of naturalization

Each person may have filed more than one Declaration or Petition and each of them may be useful because they may have useful hints as to places in Argentina. Folks would write VERY specific place names in there.

If you need help in obtaining them, join the "Dual U.S.-Italian Citizenship" group in Facebook, then read the "Units" in that group and then cask any questions in that group.

Thank you for the information about the added notation on Caterina's 1922 return to the US from a visit to Italy. Are you referring to the handwritten numbers "621/67 1-362507-2-24-42" near her name on the manifest? The manifest refers to Caterina as an Italian citizen, so I did not realize that those handwritten numbers meant anything that could be followed up on. To what do they refer?
I have requested Teresa's ntauralization recofrd rom the US Citizenship and Immigration Service but I understand that may take some time to receive.

I followed up on the naturalization of Caterina Massetti and, from a ship manifest in 1938 it appears that she filed naturalization papers in the San Bernardino California court in 1936. That might contain interesting info--I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Hello again and thanks for all the help. I wonder how I might be able to access church records in Cerro Tanaro concerning the Massetti family? I am still looking for my grandmother's(Teresa Massetti) birth certificate and although she was born in Argentina (I think!) it is possible that some reference to her birth might appear in the church records for her family. Her sister Margherita was born in Cerro Tanaro in 1902 or so after the family returned from Argentina, and was certainly baptized. I hope there might be some reference to Teresa. It's a long shot, but does anyone know how I might pursue that?
