Seggiano is in the province of Grosseto so try if you find his military record at Grosseto state archive

http://www.archivi.beniculturali.it/UCB ... e=GROSSETO

Carpi is in the province of Modena, so try to get his military record at Modena State archive

http://www.archivi.beniculturali.it/ASMO/

I think your ancestor was that one who died in Bombay (India)

I looked at the name Berni on Italian White page http://paginebianche.libero.it for Modena and Grosseto area and it came back with some results.

while waiting to hear from the state archive office to get back to me, what do you think if i write a latter to the Berni's listed on the white page and see if any one respond with any information.. what do you think??

it could be an idea, why not.
I suggest you to write only in italian, and attach to the letter an envelope plus italian stamp, so the Berni's will reply with no cost from their pockets

It refers you to the Archivio di Stato in Frosinone since there is no apparent record for BERNI in Campobello di Licata. =Peter=

If I understand it correctly, it says they consulted the records and did not find the surname Berni present in either the Registri di Leva or the Folio Matricolare.
