Re: Help Requested

Thanks, Tessa. I have seen that and I've read quite a bit about these children. What I haven't seen much information about (and honestly, I'm a bit surprised by this!) is records when they were placed with families. Given how well documented the vital records tend to be in Italy compared to many ...

Re: Help Requested

That is so helpful, thank you! This was one of the big documents I was looking for but could not find. I knew he had been married to a woman named Assunta as Domenico's granddaughter, who now lives in the US, mentioned she is named Sue after her grandmother, Assunta. The only record I was able to ...

Help Requested

My great grandfather was one of my children that were abandoned in Italy in the late 1800s. I was able to find his birth record (Arturo Paggetti) in Bergamo, Italy. I also know that, for at least some time, he lived with a family called the Froscio family. I believe the parents were Domenic(o?) and ...

Postcard from Italy

So I think this postcard is from my great grandfather's sister (Rita, maybe?). Any help transcribing/translating would be awesome.

Re: Help with a town name (maybe?)

Since you guys have been such pros...anyone want to help sort out this love copy of a post card sent to our friend Arturo from (I think?) his adopted sister Rita?

I personally especially like what appears to be writing (upside down!) along the top. It ...

Re: Help with a town name (maybe?)

Oh my goodness. This is way more than I could have expected. This means more to my family than I can even say. The only thing we're missing now is Arturo's baptism records and then I'll move on to trying to sort out the family that adopted him (even though we aren't biologically related, I've come ...

Re: Handwritten Birth Registration

Thank you for this. I was really struggling with "civico spedale nel quale" for some reason.

I think it was spedale that threw me off as that isn't a translation I know for "hospital" but I suppose it could have just been miswritten. Or an old translation.

Hi Nicole

Spedale would have ...

Help with a town name (maybe?)

HI

I'm trying to sort out if this is a town name (and if so, what town). You were all so helpful in translating my ggrandfather's birth registry so I thought I'd pop back on over!

I thought it was Piassa Barovi but I cannot find anything similar to that name in or around Bergamo.

Re: Help with birth record - no parents?

Hi Montclaire,

This is very similar to the situation with my GG GF. His birth registration also has a woman that doesn't consent to be named (although it doesn't mention if she was married or widowed). How exciting that yours lists who was to raise her!

It seems this was more common than I'd have ...

Re: Accent marks

I cannot imagine that it would. Everything I have read talks about significant changes to the name. So, for instance, my great grandfather was Arturo and he began going by Arthur. It is pretty clear that Arthur is an "Americanized" version of Arturo. If he had started going by John they would ...

Re: Missing Document Question

Thanks for the reply! I don't think she knows she needs the state/county records so I'll let her know that. I wonder, though, didn't states transfer all records to NARA and USCIS at one point? I thought anything after the early 1900s was with them. We talked about how this will likely raise ...

Missing Document Question

Hi there

While I wouldn't be able to get dual citizenship in Italy (I actually would qualify but there are way too many missing documents to even attempt), my very good friend does have a strong case and is attempting to pursue this. However, she's run into one hitch.

Her maternal great ...

Re: Handwritten Birth Registration

I've always been pretty sure it came from wild imaginations mixed with a hint of truth (Arturo did take a short trip to Argentina after coming to America so someone probably heard that and extrapolated and the family that raised him were Sicilian so again...someone heard something and ran with it :D ...
