What you need to do is obtain vital records (Birth, marriage, death records), ship manifest , church records from Argentina. By obtaining these documents, you will hopefully obtain his Italian birth town.

It seems the little information I got was enough

Anyway all the paperwork is ready, now there are only 2 options. Waiting for a turn at the embassy or paying 5000 dollars for getting in 10 days in Italy.

Right now I go for number 1 and have number 2 as a back-up

Peter, thanks the problem is not the documents in Argentina because I have all the documents the only problem is that the death-certificate says that his parents were Giovanni Russo and Dominga(Domenica I assume) Tablar. My doubt right now is that there was an error in the death-certificate and that they don´t have the name of the mother correct.

Is there any way to find which the parents were of Italians that emigrated?

Does the Italian state keep records of that?

Where are the records of parents of immigrants in Argentina kept?

Is there a record somewhere of Domenica Tablar? Probally in the Calabria area?

The death cetificate says that both parents Vincente(Vicenzo) Russo and Dominga(Domenica) Tablar were Italians and died.

it are so much Giovanni Russo born in all italy around same birth year of your ancestor... it is necessary to know almost the right mother surname spelling, just for to understand the calabrian province.... almost for to have a idea...
before of a search in Italy, needing of to collect any possible data in Argentina... maybe by marriage certificate you can know more; on the death certificate the mother surname is wrong completely... but I believe hat on the marriage certificate Giovanni( Juan) given right info....

also if you will know the birthplace now, and you will send the request in Italy just now, you will have the document abt enter 45/60 days.... so in any case is out for your appointment...

no it is no enough but is enough for to have a idea of calabrian province where Juan came from.... always if the mother surname is a bit particular, because if is common as the surname Russo, it is a problem... equally...

as you can think that it is possible to find something on line without to know the birthplace? I searched in Cosenza archive ( the documents on line is abt the 20% complete) and it are several Giovanni Russo but nobody with Vincenzo father...; I searched in Catanzaro archive( no complete also) and nothing; the archives on line is no completed... so we cannot say if he was born in Cosenza area, Catanzaro area, Reggio Calabria area, Crotone area, Vibo Valentia area...

For to obtain a document needing of to have sure data; for to search a document as for your ancestor, needing to search in military papers and for to search in military papers needing:
- to have almost the province of birth
-and to have the RIGHT parent's names, especially when the name of ancestor is so popular...

and if the search by military papers is positive , only so to send the request in the civil records office of birth common, and after that to wait.... and to wait...... and if they no send to write again.... it is no easy...
as you can understand, needing of research, work, time and patience....

The birth certifcate I have right now is of Giovanni Russo, born 1883 in Gioa Tauro son of Vincenzo Russo and Rosa Ierace. This birth certifcate coincide with the search engine of the shipping manivests because I knew he came as a small boy and with his brother and uncle. The same boat also had 2 Russo´s more with the same age range. The only problem is that the death certificate of Juan Russo says he was 50 so he must have been born in 1883.

My guess is that because Giovanni Russo moved to Argentina as a small boy he search for the military records would be useless. Is that correct?

I have 2 people looking for the birth certificate(with help from the death certificate of Giovanni Russo) but it seems to me it´s probally impossible without knowing the correct last name of the mother and the birthplace of Giovanni Russo.

Gioia Tauro is a town in the province of Reggio Calabria. Both surnames Russo and Ierace appear in that town. That's where I would start.
