Sandan (?)
My grandfather (the only Italian in my ancestry) told everyone he was from a town in the area of Naples called Sandan. We all took him at his word. He passed away decades ago. Now, in searching my family roots, I find that there appears to be no such town.
Is there an area or town near Naples that he could have mispronounced (or we could have misheard ) that sounds like Sandan ??

Re: Sandan (?)
The closest I could find is Sant'Antimo
Re: Sandan (?)
Suona un po' come se fosse Sant'Anna, però potrebbe essere una frazione o un paesetto e non credo sia facile trovarlo.

Have you placed him on a ship's manifest or any other US record which may list exact town of origin?

Legend has it that the spelling of his name changed significantly, so I have not been able to find him on the Ellis Island website, by the way can someone translate Lucap's response ?
Thanks to everyone who responded.

Looks like Sant'Anna is in Tuscany. One thing Gramps was adamant about was that he was a Neopolitan.

This has a list of towns in the Province of Naples: http://en.comuni-italiani.it/063/index.htmldlaccavole wrote:Looks like Sant'Anna is in Tuscany. One thing Gramps was adamant about was that he was a Neopolitan.
Do any of these seem familiar?
My Italian surnames:
Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone
Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile
Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

It sounds like Sant'Anna, but it could be a hamlet or a very small village and I don't believe it is easy to find it.[/quote]
Re: Sandan (?)
What about draft registrations? 1917/18 and 1942?
Very often the town is listed, also naturalization records may have more precise information.

Re: Sandan (?)
The town is actually SAN DONATO, a "frazione" or suburb of the town of APICE, , Province of Benevento, and Ariano Irpino in the province of Avellino and Carinola in the province of Caserta.

Thanks Peter...that actually seems the most probable answer. Thanks also to all who responded.
