Found a manifest for 1884, for "Commans Farinella". The image quality for the manifest is very poor, but I'm sure the name actually reads "Tommaso." His age is 18, laborer, from Italy. (That would make birthdate about 1866.)
The ship is the SS. Archimede departing from Palermo, Naples and Gibraltar, to New York. Tommaso is on line 207.

Tessa, Thanks for the info. Where did you find this manifest? Castle Garden? Is there an index for Castle Garden? I searched there and found nothing. Thanks again. This could be my great grand father because on one of the census' he indicated his first name was Tomasso as well. Thanks!!!
