Maria (Silla) Angelini
Hi everybody! I always seem to have the most obscure ancestors who enjoyed changing their names, and in true Italian character never cared for laws regarding their legal name.
So basically I am looking for a birth certificate or something to prove the existence of Maria Silla Angelini born 1883, later to be known as Celia Spero. She married Pasquale Vincenzo Spero/Spera on June 1, 1907. Maria Angelini's parents were Bernardo Angelini and Carmela Paradiso. As well, I found the parents through the marriage document so I guess they married in Italy? Pasquale supposedly immigrated in 1907. He was from Craco, Basilicata, Italy. I found a brother named Alfredo Angelini (changed to Angeline). My issue is I can't find anything on her other than her children and marriage. Birth Certificates and immigration are nowhere. I also am unsure of her legal name which doesn't help. And her first child was Ferdinando, I being related to Julia Spero.
Any help on my great great grandmother would be wonderful! Thank you!

Grazie Adelfio! There of relation and possibly born in the same year as Maria, perhaps they were twins? I'll look into it! And at least now I know where they are from.adelfio wrote: 19 May 2017, 03:06 Name:

Just some information about Craco, Basilicata, if you are interested...
http://thecracosociety.org/index.htm
Here is a possible arrival in 1906 for Pasquale Spera.
He is age 24, single, going to Corona, Queens (to a cousin)
He lists his last place of residence as Ferrandina, Potenza.

Re: Maria (Silla) Angelini
Thank you so much Tessa! This makes so much sense, Corona is supposedly where they were living in NY for plenty of years and where Julia went back to live once marrying. Also wow, I am looking at the Craco Society website and it's very interesting info about San Vincenzo. I guess that's why Pasquale's middle name was Vincenzo, it had a lot of meaning for the town.Tessa78 wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:49 Just some information about Craco, Basilicata, if you are interested...

This is the main record I found of her name being Maria Silla Angelina (Angelini). It's the birth certificate of Ferdinando.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1 ... f=LT3G-FGN
Shortly after, she regularly goes by Celia instead of Maria in all of the US census records.
In her marriage record though, she is only mentioned as Maria Angelini.

I'm guessing Silla/Celia was her middle name, and after awhile she chose to use it as her first. Pasquale even had a middle name which I did not know of until I found his WWII draft mentioning his name as Pasquale Vincenzo Spero.

Yes, many girls were given two names, the first of which was Maria in honor of the Blessed Virgin; and they would be known by their second given name, in this case Celia.
I believe that the "Silla" on the birth act for Ferdinando was a misspelling by a clerk writing a phonetic spelling of the name as it was pronounced by someone with an Italian accent.
Of course, we will need to find a manifest (or birth act) to verify...

I have Paradiso ancestors last known to be from Salandra, Matera, Basilicata, which is not far from Craco. Francesco PARADISO married Pasquarosa BASILE about 1816. Their son Giuseppe married Angela SAPONARA in 1850.
Giuseppe/Angela's daughter Teresa md in 1885 to Giuseppe LEONE, he the son of Giovanni & wife Anna Maria PANELLA.
Teresa & Giuseppe/Joseph immigrated to US in 1887 & lived & died in Camden, New Jersey.
Also researching in Armento, Potenza, Basilicata.
Other surnames are Mangieri, Donadio, Senise, Di Santo, Santangelo, Curto, etc.
