Scoppi Family
Scoppi Family
I am trying to find my husband's Italian ancestors, one of whom might have been Felice Scoppi who was born in Rionero in Vulture, Basilicata, probably between 1840 and 1860. Hopelessly vague, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is always best to begin with what you know for certain and then work backwards.Sangay wrote:I am trying to find my husband's Italian ancestors, one of whom might have been Felice Scoppi who was born in Rionero in Vulture, Basilicata, probably between 1840 and 1860. For example, you know with certainty your husband's name and those of his parents. The next step is to get his parent's birth certificates showing the names of their parents, and so on, and so on.
At what point in the ancestry you have traced thus far do you delve from "this person I am certain of" to "this person may belong in my tree"?

Re: Scoppi Family
Thanks for your suggestions. I have traced the family back as far as is possible in the UK, which is where we live, and the original UK Scoppi who emigrated from Italy first appears on the 1881 census at the age of 30. The problem is that we do not know where he came from in Italy, or how he travelled. I have tried, without success, to find shipping details. Given that Scoppi is an unusual name in Italy I am hoping it shouldn't be too difficult to trace his origin.

Re: Scoppi Family
Thanks, yes we already have the census information, back to the 1881 census, and all of them have 'Italy' as Stepheno Scoppi's origin. We have just returned from two weeks in Umbria where we found a ruined village called Scoppio but it's unlikely that there is a connection! I shall have to make further enquiries of records in London, immigration in the 1880s, ships etc. And possibly Italian registers. There may be a link to Basilicata, Felice Scoppi, who lived there in the 1870s, but whether there will be any records available is another matter.
Many thanks for your interest, though.

Re: Scoppi Family
I know that this thread is old, but did you ever find any information about Stephen Scoppie and Mary Ann Rossi? I am also looking for information about them.
Thanks

Re: Scoppi Family
I made contact with a Scoppi in Italy, who sent me the names of his ancestors. This was some years ago - I will dig out the email and send it to you. It is possible the family came from southern Italy, poor peasants, but it is just a thread I was trying to follow.
