Merenda from Cosenza who settled in Philadelphia

Post by chezzaluna »

So this is my second time trying to obtain more information about my family so that I can proceed with the jure sanguinis process. I do not speak with my father, I do not have contact with his siblings, which are mostly deceased. My father has a very popular name and so does his father. I would like some guidance as to how I can obtain information about my grandfather with just my parents' names.

I don't even know what year he was born. I just know he was born in Calabria, probably Cosenza. I know he wasn't married to my grandmother Fanny, and I do not know what her birth name was.

I understand it may be extremely difficult, but any suggestions would be lovely.

My father is Anthony Joseph Merenda and his father, my grandfather, was Giuseppe Merenda.

Let me know if you can guide me in the right direction.

Thank you!

Hello Cher,

Could this be your GF Giuseppe?
Residing in 1942 in Philadelphia, operating a grocery store?
DOB is 19 March 1894...
WWII Registration Card
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1861144

And this possible naturalization card in 1927 in Philadelphia.
This Giuseppe Merenda identifies 3 children still in Italy (Louise, Angelo, Assentine)

The death certificate agrees with the date of birth and occupation in the WWII Registration card I posted above :-) and the naturalization card...

On his Declaration of Intent to naturalize, Giuseppe identifies his place of birth as Paterno. If you are sure that he was born in Cosenza, then this would mean PATERNO CALABRO, Cosenza, Italy :-)

Here is the ship manifest from 1921 on the Dante Alighieri that is sited in his declaration.
He is traveling with his brother Carmine Merenda, and sister-in-law Rosina Mauro. He is leaving his wife Teresa Mauro in Paterno, and his destination is Philadelphia.
He is on line 15.

For citizenship purposes, you will need to write for a certified copy of the birth act.
Include your photo ID, and an email address should then need to contact you.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Municipio, 10
87040 Paterno Calabro (CS)

Here is a POSSIBLE record of naturalization for Federico Soldatelli in 1922 - he was a soldier, and unmarried, so possible his naturalization was through the military.
Certificate #1858758

Here is a Military Census for military personnel in Germany in 1920.
He is on line 61
He is a Pvt. from Pennsylvania, born in Italy, immigrated in 1913

EDIT TO ADD***

Here is a POSSIBLE arrival manifest for Fanny... in 1926.
She is listed at 36-11...as Soldatelli Feriani Fanny, age 18, married, going to USC in Glen Rogers, WV
On the SAME manifest list is Federico Soldatelli (at 25-1), age 30, married, same destination (a military base? in WV)

For citizenship you need of an original document called "Estratto dell'Atto di nascita", available for any legal use.
If you have any problem to obtain it my company can provide to make it produce in short time to the city hall of paterno....let me know at email address: weloveancestry@gmail.com
