Documentation when rejected for naturalization because of illiteracy

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Documentation when rejected for naturalization because of illiteracy

Post by presto480 »

Hello - I have a letter of no records of naturalization for my ancestor from USCIS. There is also no declaration of intention. I also have their alien registration file which states that they were rejected for naturalization because of illiteracy - it doesn't say what year but they moved to the USA around 1900. Would there have been any documentation filed anywhere when they were rejected that I could obtain?

Have you checked with NARA? They may have any preliminary papers that were submitted (date dependent), and its possible that a notation was made on those records. If, however, you have the requisite no record letters, you can then use census data (also obtained through NARA) to support that claim.
