Ciao everyone!
After taking a 4 year hiatus from my research I am ready to get back at it (although it feels like I am starting from scratch).
My goal is to find out if my GGM's baptismal record survived the big earthquake of 1980. Her birth record was destroyed and I am looking at an expensive and lengthy court case in order to get the record rebuilt. I want to do my due diligence to make sure that there is not a surviving baptismal record.
Has anyone had success with finding baptismal records of ancestors who were born in Torella Dei Lombardi?
Her name was Filomena Salerno, and she was born in May 1885 in Torella Dei Lombari. Her parents were Rosaria Cozza and Ciriaco Salerno.
Should I just try and contact every church in Torella? I would greatly appreciate any tips.
Grazie!

Here is her birth record:

Maybe if it's not available at town oficces, you can get a certificate at the Archivio di Stato di Avellino.

What Pippo is saying is that:
Civil registration records were and are kept at the local registrar’s office [anagrafe] in each town or city. Therefore, you must determine the town where your ancestor lived before you can find the records. Your ancestor may have lived in a village that belonged to a nearby, larger town. Large cities may have many civil registration districts.
A copy of each record is sent to the procura della repubblica—which is similar to a district court in the United States—in the provincial capital. Because the civil records are legal documents and needed for government purposes, such as military draft, the duplicate is held by the tribunale (district court).

I have a hard time retaining some of this info (my researching isn't consistent enough for me to do so - plus, I'm getting older), but I love reading some of the long-time, learned posters who, at times, impart such great knowledge. Whether it's simple or complex. It's really a wonderful thing to behold. You people know who you are. Keep up the great work. Such a valuable resource - one to never be taken for granted.
