Diocesan Archives Question

Post by crossl »

Hello to all, would anyone know which diocese the Santa Maria Maggiore church in Casacalenda, provincial di Campobasso, Molise would have belonged to in the mid 1600's?
I am wondering whether the Diocesan Archives would contain a copy of the church records.

Thank you.

It was rare for the dioceses to keep record copies from individual parishes prior to 1917.

The following is current info. I don't know about the mid 1600s-

Thanks Erudita74, I was hoping perhaps the diocese would have had a copy.

Frank, you have nothing to lose by sending an email to the diocesan archives at the email address provided by mmogno. Just bear in mind that there was no regulation concerning whether an individual parish submitted copies of their registers or records to the dioceses. So when, for example, a church was destroyed by natural disaster such as an earthquake, records housed within the church were then totally lost as well, if the parish had not sent copies to its diocese. So writing to the diocesan archive is a hit or miss thing, but always worth a try. You might just get lucky. Let us know, if you do get lucky or, at least, get a response.

I spent a few days at the Diocesan Archives for Penne-Pescara (located in Penne) two years ago and the priest who manages the archives was in the process of going to each of the parishes and moving all of the pre-1900s records to the archives. It was very fortunate for me, as he was able to obtain a lot of the records I was looking for. So hopefully the next time I go back, all of them will be in the same spot. Obviously I have no idea what other Dioceses are doing but I didn't need to go to individual parishes.

Frank
You should write in Italian. The following link has a model letter to the diocesan archives to help you.
