Customs House Ship Manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

I'm thinking of sending something like this. I'm trying to cover a couple of scenarios without making it too complicated. I appreciate any comments as to the language used or corrections of the Italian.

Egregi Signori,

My primary interest is the last son, my gf, born 1870, but I wasn't sure how he might show up, so I'm using the whole time period from his father to past the father's death. I am assuming there is a POSSIBILITY they would inform me if there are documents for a later time period (if not the time period I mention), even if pertaining to another family member or relative, past 1900 ...

I am trying to determine some of the modern-day Balsamo, potential relatives, who may live in Afragola, and somehow eventually try to contact them.

Here in Canada and to certain extent in the US, it's still relatively easy to find relatives, even without using social media. I'm not so sure about Italy.

I was thinking if there was a historical (or genealogical) society which might have a local presence in or around Afragola ?

There are 37 listings in the Italian Phone Book for Balsamo (landlines)...
Perhaps one or more are relatives? You might want to write and inquire.

Thanks Tessa. Only 37 letters to send  :D

I'm trying to determine from this birth for Giovanna, where Celeste was living. It appears to be a late registration (1899), for her birth 1867. I see the address no. 13 Pigna, is it referring to Celestes's current address, or the one from 1867 when she was with Pasquale ?

As to the letters... pick a given name that you might find in the ancestral line and write to that person or persons :-) Even I would not attempt to write 37 letters

Celeste Moccia was living at 13 Via Pigna when she appeared on 27 April 1889 before the official. She was age 50.

Is it common for communes to renumber their addresses? I have this for her house (right-side), I'm thinking about old maps to trace the original house....she moved from Santa Maria street to Pigna after she remarried in 1872.

You can email the comune and ask them about street name and number changes.

I found this site which lists current parishes:
http://www.thecatholicdirectory.com/dir ... eid=189427

My earlier relatives were in a parish named Santa Maria (from civil registry docs), there are or were at least 2 such parishes. I was thinking if this might be the same parish (Aiello)? I would like to contact them regrading the church records.

You should definitely send an inquiry, and include the civil record which identifies the Parish church.

Can anyone attempt a translation of Giovanna's birth register about 6 posts before.
I basically know most of it, but in particular I can't read the Annotation ?
thanks

Excellent, thank you both

Unfortunately, there is no image for the deaths (unlikely it will be done), but was able to check up to 1929.
