How did G'Dad get from East to West Coast in 1890s?

My grandfather and some of his brothers came into the U.S. from Italy in the 1890s through New York. They settled in California.

But I cannot find any record of how they traveled from the East Coast to the West Coast.

What were the most common methods of travel during that time period and how might I find out if there are records for individual travelers?
