Massone family research in Genoa (circa 1830) - Abbreviations

Post by simsamsim »

Hello, I have some language and historical questions regarding a family called Massone in Genoa, which I am hoping someone might be able to help me with. Google Translate is quite helpful, but gets confused when words are abbreviated! I will list them below. I hope this layout is helpful.

In the following survey of prominent citizens in Genoa from 1814, I find the following:

Marcello Massone, Proprietario - Genova - Gran talento, onesto, affez.mo. Molta influenza sul popolo.
What is “affez.mo”. Also, what is a “Proprietario” – an owner of what?

sia per i loro talenti e attaccamento a S- S. R. M., sia per la loro influenza preponderante sopra le Popolazioni,
What is “S.-S. R. M.”?

DE AMICIS, figlio di un Servitore, Direttore dei Sali e Tabacchi. Sotto il Governo francese era impiegato nei Diritti riuniti. E’ Napoleonista, ed appartiene agl’indipendenti.
Is a “Servitore” just a normal house servant or is this an official term?

In a city guide from 1835 (L'indicatore: ossia, guida per la città e ducato di Genova), some terms are abbreviated:

PII STABILIMENTI. Deputati
Massone Avv. Franc., via Garibaldi 216

What are “PII STABILIMENTI”?

REGIE DOGANE NEL DUCATO. ISPEZIONE DELLA SPEZIA
Massone Girolamo, Comm. alle Brig.

What is “Comm. Alle Brig.”?

COLLEGIO DI FILOSOFIA ED ARTI
Multedo Sac. Ambrogio., C. Mer. civ. Sav., crosa Carignano casa Massone
What is “C. Mer. civ. Sav.", and what does “crosa” mean?

Many thanks!

affez.mo ---affezionatissimo, nella chiusa delle lettere (di solito abbrev., aff. mo)-very affectionate

property owner -proprietario

The part about Marcello Massone is found in a pdf file called Informazioni di Polizia Sull'Ambiente Ligure 1814-1816 by Vito Vitale. Page 426, I believe is the right page for that info.

Hello!
"Proprietario" is typically an owner of land and buildings, that he lives on.
S.S. R.M. might be "Sua Signoria la Maestà Reale" = "his Majesty (the King)"

Hi Erudita, Pippo, thank you so much for your replies. A reference to loyalty to the king seems appropriate for the context.

Erudita, thanks for Commissario alle Brigadieri.

Comm. Alle Brig = Commissario alle Brigate

crosa = croce = incrocio, crocevia = crossroads
"crosa Carignano casa Massone" is the address

C. Mer. civ. Sav. = Cavaliere al merito civile di Savoia
