My relative left from Cherbourg, France. Why/how?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

My relative left from Cherbourg, France. Why/how?

Post by nrepole »

Hi everyone
Just struggling to work out why my great uncle, Pietro Pinto, departed from
the port of Cherbourg in France in November, 1920. He lived in the town of Rapone,
Basilicata and the natural port of departure for anyone headed to America
would have been Naples.
He had recently arrived back in Rapone in early 1920 after having served in the
Italian Army (and seen brutal action in France). Why did he go back to France?
How did he get there? Was departing from less obvious ports common at the time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all
I just noticed that my relative Pietro Pinto (aged 21) migrated to US from port
of Cherbourg alongside a young man from the same town as his (who was aged 18).
Was it likely that my relative was assisting his fellow townsman
migrate to US without having to do military service in Italy???
Does this sound right?
