Italians in Sao Paolo Brazil

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Italians in Sao Paolo Brazil

Post by goriogal »

Does anyone know anything about a group of Italians from the Pordenone region who traveled to Sao Paolo, Brazil around 1900? My grandfather was born there and they returned to Italy a year later. I'm trying to make sense of why the family traveled there in the first place. All I know is that there many families from that region who made the move to Brazil with them.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Brazilians

During the last quarter of the 19th century, the newly-united Italy suffered an economic crisis. Northern Italy had unemployment because of the introduction of new techniques in agriculture, and Southern Italy remained underdeveloped and almost untouched by modernization in agrarian structure. Even in the North, industrialization was still in its initial stages, and illiteracy was still common (but that was even more true in the South).[23] Thus, poverty and lack of jobs and income stimulated Northern (and Southern) Italians to emigrate. Most Italian immigrants were very poor rural workers (braccianti).[24]

Thank you. I had heard many years ago a story about how Italy was trying to "colonize" Brazil and had offered incentives to any families willing to immigrate. Was wondering if there was any truth to that but it seems not.

The excerpt I posted is probably not the complete answer. You really need to do further research on this topic. Go to googlebooks.com and search the topic. There may be previews there of some books which have more info for you. Sorry, but right now, I don't have the time to further research this topic for you.
