Hi

I looked through several indices yesterday and I didn't see anything like the name Meo/Mayo,di meo/mayo in the town of Montemaggiore Belsito. I doubt Sofia's family were from there. What I would do is set up a new thread specifically for Sofia asking for help locating her birth town. You need to start at your end - the US? giving us as much info you have like passenger lists, census records, naturalisation records, obits, whatever you have. Just make it short and to the point and supply the links you have to the online information.

I did have a quick search on Family Search and noticed that there were discrepancies in information on census records re her place of birth, eg. both New Jersey and Italia were mentioned as birth places. I don't have access to Ancestry.com at home and I'm staying clear of public computers/places at the moment for obvious reasons. There are others here on the forum that do have access to Ancestry, who are brilliant at locating records to help establish the birth town, so hopefully they will be able to help. You can always link this thread to your new thread so that we can see what has already been established.

Best to you with this. I shall keep an eye out.

Di Maio is also another possibility?

Hi Angela...want to give you an update on my search for Sophia Mayo Ciccarelli. I posted a new topic as you suggested and two wonderful researchers found her marriage and burial records in Jersey City, NJ. She was born 1878 in Italy but not know where. Marriage to Onofrio in JC 12/1896, died in May 1930 in JC after stroke. She was naturalized citizen thru Onofrio but not know when. Have contacted JC for her naturalization records as they should have her birth date and birth town....I hope.

But guess what else these wonderful researchers found.....I AGAIN had the wrong GF birth date and parents....just like with Carmine Saporito! My Onofrio born in May 1873 to Salvatore and Crucifissa Lucca....not the wrong Onofrio born in 1876 to Francesco and Crucifissa Militello! This Onofrio born 1873 matches up with his arrival in USA in 1892 at age 19 I found on Ellis Island passenger list.

I knew something was wrong when I found a 1902 NYC marriage record for Onofrio born to Francesco and Crucifissa Militello in September 1876. Can’t have two living Onofrio born in same year to same parents...even a dummy like me knows that! LOL

Here is my Onofrio birth record from Termini Imerese district of Montemaggiore Belsito. The wrong Onofrio also born there so that was the confusion...with both mothers having same first name. The record doesn’t say Crucifissa but I think the spelling is wrong in record.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=469797

Now I have to find Salvatore and Crucifissa birth records using the ages listed for them in this birth record. I hope the years are available on Antenati site.

No luck finding immigration date for Sophia Mayo, Maio, DeMaio, DiMaio, DeMayo or any variation of last name. As a matter of fact I couldn’t find any Sophia first name. One researcher said her name listed in burial records as Serafina tho. No luck with that first name in EI records either.

Just thought you would like to know where I am now with Sophia search. Hope naturalization records provide the needed info.

Hi Angela.....FYI....the wrong Onofrio, born to Francesco Ciccarelli, is my Onofrio first cousin...Francesco was brother of Salvatore born to same parents.

I have Salvatore and wife, Genoveffa Lucca marriage records for 2/26/1870, parents of my Onofrio. Also have Salvatore birth record of 6/3/1844 but have to find Genoveffa birth record. Onofrio birth record says she was 22 when he born in 1873 but no Lucca born in 1851 so don’t think her birth was 1851...have checked prior and past 1851 records. I did find her sisters, Angelas....one born 2/14/1851 and another born 10/1852 with same parents.....so I guess first Angela died.

Will keep looking.

Ok! Thanks for the updates. I did see that you had set up a new thread for Sofia/Serafina and that you had a couple of researchers helping you with this. That's great. So pleased that you now have the correct Onofrio. I'll leave them to it, otherwise we end up covering the same ground and I'm bit stretched at the moment with other commitments.

Best to you. Take care,
Angela
