Good afternoon.
I am wondering if anyone can solve a mystery for me.
My great great grandfather was Joseph Quoroll who was born in Italy on or around 1842 and settled in Stoke on Trent. He was living in Stoke with his uncle John Quoroll by 1861 and appears on the census as his nephew.
I believe his family name was Queirolo and that he possibly came from Genoa. There is also a DNA link to a Lo Presti family who come from Sicily.
I can't find any birth records of Joseph at all when going through the http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it site. would be fantastic to find out about Jospeh, his family members and where he came from.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks, Emma

Re: Help with Queirolo Family Mystery!
Just checked again and his birth date is estimated to be 1844 in the UK census. Also living with John in Stoke on Trent is a Catherine Quoroll who is listed as his niece.

Re: Help with Queirolo Family Mystery!
Hi Emma - I have something that might support your idea that "Queirolo" was a Genoa surname. Here are two clippings about a Genoese agent with a very similar name. One is from an 1874 congressional hearing, the other is from a New York Tribune article, dated November 23, 1872. Both pieces are about hundreds of Italians who were defrauded by shipping agents. As you can see from the clippings, one of these agents was based in Genoa. In the investigation, several Italian immigrants testified about the scandal. Obviously, the reporters had trouble spelling the Italian surname, but the version in the Tribune article, "Quezjolo," is very similar to your "Queirolo."

Queirolo can be found in Genoa and many nearby villages as well as the area immediately surrounding Rapallo. It also looks like he is living with a younger sister Caterina on the 1871 census which will be important to help find the right family.
This looks like a marriage for his uncle which gives his father's name as Francesco (Joseph's grandfather by extension)

Here are 14 pages from the Gazzetta Nazionale Geovese, published on June 17, 1797. Each one contains the name "Queirolo":

Page 292 has a list of elected representatives; among them is an Agostino Queirolo. Here are the rest of the results on the Internet Cultural site for the search-word "Queirolo":

Re: Help with Queirolo Family Mystery!
Thank you all. I have found a Giuseppe born in 1845 in rappello and a Catterina born in 1847 but they have different parents. Wondering if they are maybe cousins rather than siblings. There was also a James who came over and settled in stoke at the same time. I have also found a dna link to a person on ancestry whose family are Queirolos from Rapello and this Giuseppe is listed in her family tree. I can’t see from this record that John (father Francesco) would be an uncle. Need to do some more digging.
