Family Search’s shared trees

Post by ameb10 »

Hello,
I’m not sure if any of you have explored Family Search’s “Family History Activities”, but they are quite fascinating. One of my favorites is the “Famous Relatives”, it shows you some famous relatives you are related to.
With that being said, I was wondering if there were any sites that had that similar feature but did not have the shared tree feature. I know Family Search prides themselves in that aspect because it helps people collaborate, but I am frustrated with people adding children to individuals in my tree, without them actually being related. Hopefully my issue makes sense. If there isn’t a similar site with the “Famous Relatives” feature, is there a way to disable people adding individuals to your tree? Or a way for you to approve their suggestions?
Thank you.

I can't see that there is a way that you can disable people from adding people to your tree, but I think that you should be able to remove what they have added. If not then you could message the person who has added the information and ask them to delete it if it is incorrect. You might be better not to have your tree there.

Ancestry.com may be a better alternative. You can choose your tree to be either public or private. If it is private you will still get "Hints" but you decide whether to add the hint to your tree or not. You can invite people to be "Contributors" to your tree or to just be a "Guest" on your tree. This is my understanding anyway. I only have a tiny branch of my tree with Ancestry, for a specific purpose. You would have to sign up to Ancestry as a non-subscriber.
