Terracina - Death Records

Post by samantha235 »

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to obtain death records from Terracina 1891-1901. I've found some online but not for this time period. I believe my great Uncle was born here and both my gg grandparents died there. Giuseppe DiLuzio d.o.b. approx 1892 and I'm sure both my gg parents died after his birth but before 1900 as the children were apparently orphaned by 1901.

Philomene LeFlemme born Le Harve, France in 1862 and Gisuseppe Franceso Luzio born Terelle, 1850. The couple were married in France and their 3rd daughter was born there but I loose track of them in France after 1888. The next time they are mentioned is on my g.aunts wedding certificate (1905) who has them as last living in Terracina but now deceased.

Any help would be greatly appreciated x

Nothing in the town before 1871. Parish records would be your only solution. Terelle records up to 1865 are on the antenati site. French records are almost identical to Italian except they are in French of course. Many are on line. Check with Family Search.

Thank you Ann. Can you point me to where I may find the records from 1871 as the records I'm looking for are after this date.

These blog posts should help eliminate the magnifying glass.
I found one!!! I cannot thank you enough. Going to look for the other one, and perhaps the birth certificate of their son. Can I ask something else please. The certificate I found has widow then my GG Grandfathers name. I'm assuming this meant he died first? I don't speak Italian so I'm trying to translate. Thank you again!

The records for 1893 and 1894 are missing from the film Morti 1889-1902. Is this likely to mean those records are no longer there? I'm grateful to have found my ggmother in 1896 but was hopeful to find my ggfather to who died a couple of years before.

It's always best to post the link to the record that you are enquiring about so that we can give you an informed reply. I think I have located the record which you are referring to, and yes Giuseppe (correct spelling) was deceased already when his wife Filomena died:

Death No 136: Filomena Maria Leflem

Registered in Terracina on 1 September 1896

Filomena Maria Leflem died the same day, 1 September 1896 at 1 am, in Contrada le Arene. She was 36 yo, a contadina (peasant), residing in Terracina, born in Havre Semra? Inferiore di Francia, parents unknown, and was the widow of Giuseppe Francesco Di Luzio.

Terracina records are no longer locked so can be viewed at Family Search.

Yes the 1893 and 1894 years are missing from that film. It's possibile that they were not filmed for whatever reason. (It makes mention on the film that some records are missing.) You could possibly try writing to the town and asking whether they have the 1893 and 1894 records and if they could search for Giuseppe's death record. Have you checked all the other years prior to 1896?

See my previous post here.

How surprising it is to find someone inquiring about a person who lived in my hometown! Also, one of the persons who reported the death to the civil status officer was the city's midwife (Giulia Giannetti), who is also the great-great-grandmother of one of my acquaintances.

However, the act seems to be in the name of Filomena Maria Lefleur, born in (Le) Havre, Lower Seine, France.

About the presence of the "Terellani" in Terracina in the late 1800s / early 1900s, here is a brief article by a French travel writer of the time:

----------
There are villages whose entire population lives in Terracina and moves there for six / seven months. Terelle, a small Neapolitan village, sends its men and women there; there is not even a valid person left, except the priests and some "gentlemen" who do not need to work.

Even before the end of autumn, the Terellans arrive. Beyond the canal, they occupy a village of huts like that of Cabila, made of heather, branches and old rotten boards where they nest with their pigs.

They work mainly in the vegetable gardens and in the countryside. Their women serve, they carry the loads, they unload the gandelows, they carry the lime, the stone, the grain, the oil, the wine.

Small, often delicate, they run barefoot, carrying real donkey loads on their heads.
The Terracinese men do nothing, the Terracinese women even less: the Terellana is everyone's servant, she is good at everything; what would you do without her?

Like migratory birds, after all, they are in their migration. Of an animal regularity.
And just like migratory birds, they become restless as soon as summer comes, they gather, bundle up, load everything they have on their heads and vanish at the first fever like the swallow at the first cold
.

Thank you arturo for the article!

Terracina records on Family Search continue to be locked but they can be viewed at the antenati site.
Remember that Family Search digitized the records that they publish and that antenati publish, at the State archives who may not have a full set of records since they are the 'second' copies. The town often has a full set of records.

Thank you all so much. This site really is amazing and all your help is very appreciated. Philomene was born in Le Harve, France. After an epic search i found her birth certificate and her marriage certificate on a French site.

I have Giuseppe Francesco DiLuzio's birth certificate. He was born in Terelle, Italy. My understanding from family stories and my great aunts German marriage certificate was they both died in Terracina. As there youngest child of 4 was born around 1892 (he's the only ones birth certificate I can't find) I've looked at all the previous years from 1888 on and the only two years, prior to Philomenes death, that I can't check are the 2 I've mentioned. I will try writing directly to the town hall. Thank you all again!
