Re: Loria in Calabria
Hi,
I read that the same data published in your post is on a public family tree, but with discrepancies regarding the information you provide.
By this genealogic tree and no doubt that is abt same couple, Antonio Loria was born in San Giovanni in Fiore on 24 apr 1881 son of Giuseppe and of Barbara Brunetti.. I believe that these infos ar wrong because a Antonio Loria with these same infos don't appears on military service list in Cosenza archive database.. as a well his brother Giuseppe... and, always by this public genealogic tree, Antonio deceased on 1915 in WV, USA... but no death records in WV civil records
However by marriage record http://archive.wvculture.org/vrr/va_vie ... e=Marriage he was 21 old on 1906... so born around 1885 .....
Your Antonio Loria arrived alone in USA on 13 Aug 1902, 18 old, peasant, last residence San Giovanni in Fiore, joining to his brother Giuseppe in ... ( unreadable name town) West Virginia, USA
https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/sh ... cGciOw==/1
well the first step in any search is to make light and to find errors.
In the public genealogic tree on ancestry.com some info could be right, for exemple the father name, Giuseppe, and the name of brothers.. one Giuseppe, you mentioned and also Antonio stated to joining him....
So a Giuseppe iwas a brother of your Antonio .. probable trip of Giuseppe Loria, crossed trip:
https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/sh ... cGciOw==/1
joining his cousin Pietro Laratta in West Virginia
another brother was Francesco, born on 1877, and on 5th feb 1902 joining his brother Gioacchino in West Virginia, USA
https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/sh ... cGciOw==/1
Francesco Loria was born in San Giovanni in Fiore on 1877 son of Giuseppe and of Barbera IAQUINTA( no Brunetti)
Gioacchino Loria arrived in USA on 12 sep 1900, born around 1871/1872 in San Giovanni in Fiore joining to his brother in law Domenico... unreadable surname, in West Virginia, USA
https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/sh ... cGciOw==/1
Because your Antonio don't appears in the death records in West Virginia, and you say that he went back in Italy, this could be possible, because I have experience of other two similar cases and both was men of San Giovanni in Fiore, who married in West Virginia and then abandoned the italian wife in USA and went back in Italy and remarried here.... But what is the problem to find more?
The civil records of San Giovanni in Fiore are no availables at this time.... so we cannot search... Antonio don't appears in the military service database, and this match because he emigrated from Italy before of military service.. to find something, writing in the civil records office of San Giovanni in Fiore, it could be helpful, because really is a very collaborative office, but need to find right name's parents... until now I found some info, but needs to be verified... because Loria is a very very popular surname in San Giovanni in Fiore and are many people born around same year and with same first name so just the right birth date and parent's names canare helpfuls ...
best regards,
suanj

Hi Suanj - the name of the West Virginia town could be Monongah. It was the site of "the worst mining disaster in American history," according to this Wikipedia article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monongah_mining_disaster
Here's a clipping from the December 9, 1907 Fairmont West Virginian newspaper, listing the dead miners. Among them (highlighted in yellow) is a Frank Loria.

Re: Loria in Calabria
Many Italians went to West Virginia to work in the coal mines in the early 20th century. The 1987 movie "Matewan" was based on a true story about a 1920 mine war; when miners went on strike in Matewan, Italians were brought as strikebreakers to work the mines. Violence followed. Here's a book about Italians who replaced striking miners in West Virginia:
"Stepping into the Southern West Virginia Mine Wars: Italians of the Upper Kanawha Valley and the Long Ton Coal Strike of 1909” by Fred A. Barkey, PhD.
He said that Italian immigrants were "met at ports of entry by employment agents or representatives of private firms and whisked away."
Monongah was in the middle of an important coal mining district.

Re: Loria in Calabria
Hi MLoria - do you know if anyone in your family was killed in the 1907 mining disaster? Below is the headline story and at the very bottom of the page, highlighted in red, is the name of one of the victims: "Francisco Loria."
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
San Francisco's L'Italia newspaper covered the story on December 17, 1907. The article, "Dopo la Catastrophe di Monongah," is at the top of the 5th column:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
The article contains a huge list of Italian miners; the author of the article exclaimed:
"Quanti nomi italiani!" or, "How many Italian names!"

Thanks Joe, frankly. I don't know if right because the handwriting is hard to read bu seeming me that is a town with rwo names and starting with G..
Abt the disaster yes I know. Terrible.. So much terrible. From what I know Antonio abandoned Chiara around 1915.. Ibelieve that the descend think tgat ge went back in Italy, and yes this could be possible. As I said I had other two searches so similars. One sure to 100% and if my memory is ok also a second, both from same town : San Giovanni in Fiore.

Hi Suanj - thanks for pointing that out to me. I see that I was off by one line in the manifest. Monongah was the destination of Marco Perri, the passenger just above Antonio Loria. Marco was also from San Giovanni in Fiore.
Best,
Joe

Re: Loria in Calabria
Suanj - I agree that the West Virginia town listed as Antonio Loria's destination is illegible. But it looks like the second part of the name could be "prise" or "frise." I'm going out on a limb to suggest the name of the town could be Enterprise, West Virginia. The following newspaper article ("Young Man Dead of Knife Wounds") from the December 16, 1909 Clarksburg (West Virginia) Telegram describes the stabbing death of 17-year-old Samuel Loria of Dola, West Virginia:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
The red-highlighted words show you the article. The article said the stabbing occurred at the home of Samuel's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Loria. The killer was John Menard, an Italian. The following map of the northern part of West Virginia shows the location of Dola, as indicated by the red marker:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Dola, ... 80.4217573
In the center of the map is the town of Enterprise, just 12 miles northeast (to the upper-right) of Dola. About 8 miles above and to the right of Enterprise is the town of Monongah. Many Italians, including a Frank Loria, were killed in the 1907 Monongah mine disaster. This mining tragedy and the stabbing incident in Dola indicate there were at least two Frank Loria's in this vicinity between 1907 and 1909.
My final reason for suggesting the town of Enterprise is that, on the 1902 manifest, the person just above Antonio was going to Monongah, while Domenico Larotta, who is four places after Antonio on the manifest (and who is also from San Giovanni in Fiore) was going to Fairmont, West Virginia, which is only 7 miles northeast of Monongah.

Re: Loria in Calabria
My great grandfather was Francesco Loria, born Oct 18 1877. Died in July 3 1967 and lived in Clarksburg WVA. I have Barbara Brunetti as his mother. Now I doubt my own research with multiple Frank Loria in the same area.
