I am trying to find records for my great-grandparents who emigrated from Sicily. From US obituaries and census records, my great-grandmother's name is listed as Teresa/Theresa Monteleone (her husband is Michael Virzi). However, there is a NY marriage index, of which I can actually view the document itself, and would be around the year of their marriage and in the same county, which lists a Michael Virzi marrying a Filippa Monteleone.
As far as I know, Teresa is not a nickname for Filippa. Does anyone know of a connection between Teresa and Filippa? I'd like to look for the actual Italian birth records and such, but want to make sure I'm indeed finding the right person and the names are confusing me.
Thanks.

Maybe when you find her birth record, her name might be Teresa Filippa

Michele was living in Brant, Erie, NY, for the 1905 census and presumably his marriage around 1910. Not far away in Buffalo, Erie, NY, was Filippa Monteleone living with her family in the 1900 census.

This is her:

Filippa Montoleone born 22 Dec 1891 in Montemaggiore Belsito to parents Rosario Montoleone (son of Angelo), 32, and Anna Gullo, 27.
Rosario is just living with his wife in 1920, no kids.

Rosario is living with his wife and youngest daughter Angela in Brant in 1910, suggesting they were living in the same small town as Michele Virzi around the year of his marriage and Filippa is no longer living with her father.

Michele and his wife, now Teresa, on the 1910 census in Brant.
I can't really help you with why she was switching between Filippa and Teresa but it seems pretty apparent that they're the same people. The name Filippa appears again for Michele's 1942 draft registration.

rlw254, thank you so much for the research. I was able to find the immigration record for Filippa, her two sisters, and mother coming over as well.
