Question about Ancestor’s Citizenship

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Question about Ancestor’s Citizenship

Post by cassanoalloionio »

Greetings,

I am confused about the status of my ancestor's Italian citizenship. Here is a succinct overview of the situation:

My ancestor was born out of wedlock, and his parents married when he was just 8 years old. His birth certificate bears his (likely Italian citizen) father's name. However, whether his birth certificate alone is sufficient to establish paternity is unclear.

I am wondering about the possibility that my ancestor might have (alternatively) acquired Italian citizenship as a minor when his legal and biological mother automatically became an Italian citizen through her marriage (pre 1983).

There seem to be conflicting views on this.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Please explain.
You refer to an ancestor born in Italy or in USA?
If in Italy and son of unmarried parents it seems unusual there were the names of both parents on the birth certificate, more usual only one and, if they married later, the child was legitimized and took the surname of the father.
___
If a birth certificate (Italian or foreign) has the names and signatures of both parents this means the child was recognized by both parents.
